Google Cloud is a bunch of crap. In fact most Google products outside Auto and Maps are a bunch of crap.

It's a shame a major company couldn't embrace standards and could not get their head around proper self service portals and provide CLI access.

Egress is hard but oh my God Google you really really suck at making backend stuff, which should be simple, so so so much like having dental surgery with a jack hammer.

People who love people please tell them to stop using Google cloud and Google cloud products

Because somewhere out there somewhere probably made redundant is someone or a former team that decided sometime in 2017 that if you want to pull stuff out of Google then f*ck you.

Because rClone will fail if you have more than a few hundred gb. Read one nightmare of one guy with 1.5Tb to pull.

Now imagine having 17 million Lego pieces made into 377 beautiful Lego models. And you give them to a storage company to keep safe.

Imagine when you got them back they are now in 1788 new models none of which look like anything other than something a 3 year old would make out of multiple coloured bricks.

That's what happens to your data when you make the decision to put it into any Google product.

Death by json, inane folder definitions and remote connection session termination at will.

Google is crap. Period.

You will get your data back but this is like leaving your car at the airport carpark and coming back and someone has recycled it into 161816 small paperweights.

You get all the car back just not in any build order.

My cloud migration that I meant to start in Jan to pull my cloud assets from four clouds to none should complete Friday.

And it's only taken this long as the last provider's end of life / end of contract data repudiation request I put in on the 9th January meant that if I followed THEIR method of pulling the data it would have been £1800 in bandwidth by using their data tool.

Doing it by way of 187 10Gb tarballs of objects, code and project items instead is taking....

10Gb an hour.... Throttled but with no additional cost to me.

They wanted me to pull the entire lot as one.... zip file. A zip file... I've never had to open a 2tb zip file before. Not sure you can ?

That isn't good Cloud.

Which is good as my annual contract expires with them 22nd March and now I know how hard certain Cloud providers work to STOP you leaving means I will never recommend them to anyone.

Which given who I talk to is a bad deal.

We are blessed in Melksham the town I chose to have kids in (both our kids started out here in Melksham) has some amazing food and drink establishments. This is Market Tavern which is a lovely spot to have a pot of tea or a coffee (bar too).

I posted about this the other week. I have told my kids if they follow me into technology I will be massively let down.

Because reinventing yourself every few years and having to certify against technologies that are crap and to listen to vendors and platform folk who are the same people in the same roles in 10 different companies in 10 years gets boring.

Because the world will never not need undertakers, plumbers, electricians, plasterers and carpenters.

So rumour has it that they might mobilise folk up to age 52 or older with special skills into old or newer battalions or brigades. So I ping someone I used to serve with and we have decided as long as the QM hands out better trainers we're up for it.
