Last August, Lynch (who had emphysema) said he might never direct again because of the "let it rip" covid unmitigation strategies adopted by governments everywhere.
Wondering how many mourners would willingly, and without prompting, wear a mask around people suffering from Long Covid, respiratory illnesses, or other immune dysfunction, out of respect for their struggle, instead of placing the entire burden on vulnerable disabled people.
I just saw someone post a "Luigi would be disappointed in you" comment under a particularly awful post in a Facebook group and ... honestly. How does one come back from that!?!?! I don't think it's possible. Amazing.
One of those reports that keeps me up at night. I think the Irish are being more honest about this stuff than most jurisdictions. If you've ever looked into ME/CFS, you know that Long Covid is terrifying. ME/CFS creates worse QoL outcomes than terminal cancer.
> Around one in six people in Ireland have experienced long-Covid symptoms, according to a new HSE survey. > The Follow-up After Disease Acquisition (FADA) survey also found that repeat infections lead to higher risk of the condition.
> [T]he only lasting fix to the problem of where to locate water-heavy infrastructure on a drying planet must involve reducing demand. This would require a reassessment of the speed and breadth of AI adoption into every facet of consumer life. From what we know of AI’s water footprint, it seems wreckless that Google, operator of the world’s most-used search engine, has integrated the technology into every search by default.
This Canada Post strike is an existential one. Canada Post either treats their workers right, or Canada eventually loses its national postal services in a slow war of austerity that leaves the marginalized, especially in rural communities, in even greater isolation and distress.
@hrefna Not going to lie, I've been reading Shoshana Zuboff's The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, and a fun new side effect is that, among other things, I am actually concerned about data localization. :blobcat_dizzy:
Conservatives and christofascists freak out so much about queer & trans kids having basic human rights because they know that if we really protected kids in this society (here I speak broadly of North America), it means giving children a good education, access to medical and social ressources, and protecting children’s autonomy and dignity. Longterm, this helps shield those children from fundamentalist religious indoctrination and protect them from gendered and sexual abuse. This is a direct threat to many international and very wealthy Christian religious communities.
Anyways, if you ever see the words "parental rights" next to "religious freedom" all of your alarm bells should be going off at top volume.
Tomorrow, a small group of mathematicians realize that Euler's Identity has subtly changed. Scientific communities all over the world crack into factions, the majority believing that Euler's identity has not changed at all, others that the iconic proof was always incorrect, and a smaller yet very frightened faction left puzzled by how a mathematical invariant like the concept of 1 or an imaginary number can morph from one day to the next, and how the entirety of mathematics and physics must now be different. Yet, tragically, the world will refuse to change with it.
“It has become standard to describe A.I. as a tool. I argue that this framing is incorrect. It does not aid in the completion of a task. It completes the task for you. A.I. is a service. You cede control and decisions to an A.I. in the way you might to an independent contractor hired to do a job that you do not want to or are unable to do. This is important to how using A.I. in a creative workflow will influence your end result. You are, at best, taking on a collaborator. And this collaborator happens to be a mindless average aggregate of data.”
If you would not appreciate receiving from a complete stranger in public:
- screaming at you on the street - suddenly touching your ears and neck or waist or butt - sustained eye contact while whistling and gesticulating - someone grabbing your clothes and jerking you to the side
Then PLEASE do not do this to a dog!!! Even extremely friendly dogs can find this behaviour really scary!!!
