If Tesla means EVs in the U.S., in China, BYD does the same. Initially a maker of phone batteries, BYD released its first electric car in 2009. When asked about BYD in an interview two years later, Elon Musk flat-out laughed at the company, saying, “I don’t think they have a great product.” And yet in Q4 2023, BYD surpassed Tesla to become the biggest EV seller in the world. BYD has reportedly about 90,000 employees in just their R&D division, compared with Tesla’s 128,000 employees total.

@thomasfuchs @fahrni This is true of all technology products. And yet one has to ask why there are early adopters because there always are.

    This is rhetorical, of course.

“Some consumers said Sunday that their Apple Vision Pro orders could take as long as six weeks to ship”

Naysayers are still saying nay as that is what they do.

“The real test will be to see how quickly the Vision Pro reaches 1 million orders. The Apple Watch hit that number in its first day, while the iPad took 28 days. The iPhone took 74 days to reach it.”

    Suggest looking at revenue rate.

The Boring Company has raised more than $795 million from venture capitalists on Musk’s big idea: underground, multi-station roadways where autonomous vehicles could shoot off individuals to their destination at speeds of 150 miles per hour. But on the ground, after 7 years, Boring is operating a mere 2.4mi of tunnel. Meanwhile Boring projects from California to Illinois, Texas, Florida, and Maryland have all fizzled or been disbanded.

After a decade, Apple still hasn’t introduced an Apple car. Huawei and Xiaomi, whose phones battle the iPhone for supremacy in China, both released new cars this week. The companies’ goal is to keep their phone customers engaged in high-tech vehicles and seize turf before Apple’s possible entry into the fray. What about Samsung, Sony and uh, Google?
