I was not defending the author. See my comment about the need for peer review. It would have flunked, I think.
I looked up his background to get an idea of his experience and worldview. Coddled.

First, @TheConversationUS isn’t a “media outlet.” It’s a forum for public scholarship, which is not slanted politically.
This essay, however, should have been peer-reviewed.
Second, Daniel Klinghard is at the College of the Holy Cross. A small (3k), private, Jesuit, four-year liberal arts college in Worcester, MA. Old.
His PhD: Brandeis University (also in MA, also private).
Lived experience: “outside the mainstream.”
NPR goes where NO traditional media have gone: they counted and rebuted 162 of Trump’s lies and distortions from last week’s stenographic media event.
Kudos!

Well argued.
“It began as it always begins, with a lie – in this case, the lie that the wicked stabbing attack on a children’s dance party in Southport, which left three little girls dead, was the work of a Muslim migrant who had come to Britain on a small boat. I say “always” because this kind of lie has been told for the best part of a thousand years.”

Did you know there's "sexual abuse" insurance for churches?
That makes my skin crawl.

There’s a cancellation movement.
I joined it.
The @nytimes editorial board has pissed me off one time too many.
Time to cancel @washingtonpost subscription.
New executive editor (breaking news) is ex-WSJ and will run the paper thru November. His replacement is from The Telegraph.
New publisher (late 2023) is ex-WSJ (Rupert Murdoch/FOX) and UK Telegraph (which has endorsed the Conservative Party in every UK general election since 1945).
This is how Bezos joins Wall Street billionaires who are endorsing Trump.

Twelve anonymous New York citizens found former President Donald Trump guilty of 34 felony counts: falsifying business records with the intent to illegally affect the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
Not Joe Biden. Not Alvin Bragg. Not Juan Merchan.

Delicious timing. The NDA on #TheApprentice has expired and producer Bill Pruitt confesses.
As #TrumpIsGuilty tries “to persuade Americans to elect him again, in part thanks to the myth we created, I can finally tell you what making Trump into what he is today looked like from my side. Most days were revealing. Some still haunt me, two decades later.”

The @WSJ headline implies students were manipulated by outsiders
It’s disinformation. Columbia University students ACTIVELY sought advice, researched prior protests.
Better:
Before launching protest, Columbia students consulted with external groups, researched historical university responses
FROM THE STORY, 4th graph:
“We took notes from our elders, engaged in dialogue with them and analyzed how the university responded to previous protests.”
I just learned about child care workers in Oregon being bound by non-compete agreements. (h/t @ogi)

TIL that Stalin had concentration camps before WWII began. In the first four months of 1930, he forcibly removed 113,637 from Soviet Ukraine. He made them slaves.
Freezing freight cars. Frostbite. As did Hitler, Stalin made them build new villages, farms. Stalin deported 1.7 million people to Siberia, Kazakhstan and European Russia; 300,000 were from #Ukraine. #Context.

Why is New York Times campaign coverage so bad? Because that’s what the publisher wants.
@froomkin reports on Publisher A.G. Sulzberger’s talk at Oxford on Monday.
“The speech — the annual Reuters Memorial Lecture – was framed as a response to critics but never honestly engaged with their most serious and urgent concerns. Instead, Sulzberger built straw men and blew them down, from start to finish.”
Thanks, guys!

Mike, does this mean BlueSky instances are or are not integratabtle with Mastodon space?
Why not work to improve/modify a W3C effort (Activity Pub, h/t @pluralistic) rather than develop yet another protocol (if I skimmed this accurately)?
Why can’t this stuff be as interoperable as SMTP?
