@evan How did you make your corned beef? As a Paddy, I admit that I learned that corned beef and cabbage was a "traditional" St. Patrick's Day meal*after* I moved to the USA.
@evan I agree it's an important and wrong act in itself. Now is far enough, and this is a good place to draw a line and say "This is wrong. Stop." I also think that it is a precursor to worse behavior.
Speech supporting Palestinians or protesting Netanyahu's genocide in the US is less popular than other forms of opposition to US policy, and it can be painted as "support for Hamas" or "anti-Semitism", even if it is neither. The press are not reporting what Khalil said or did, just that he is Palestinian, and led student protests. The gaps get filled in as the reader wants.
But if this trap door is opened, the next trap door will be some other oppositional speech that is unpopular - maybe protests to immigration policy or government cuts end up being reason to rescind green card status for security reasons.
@evan Meaning people who say "we're past the tipping point anyway, so fuck it"? I'm not quite there, but I do feel like I don't know how we get there from here - especially when so much public policy is generating carbon dioxide. I feel like fission, bridging to sustainable fusion, is the best way to reduce emissions, but I'm not sure my voice matters in that.
@evan I was "No", but debated being a "No, but..." - his bluster may have pushed the Israelis toward a "Devil you know" position. I will note, Netanyahu seems to be hedging on the ceasefire now, and unsurprisingly blaming Hamas.
@evan Is the learning curve steep? Is there a lot of set-up time? (These are the two most common complaints in the Neary household for Catan, Diplomacy).
@bobjonkman@evan I did not know this was a thing! In the part of Ireland where I grew up, "hurry" and "furry" have the same vowel sound - "worry" is more rounded. The wikipedia article linked had my pronunciation of hurry, but not of furry. And the "non-merged" version of worry sounds closer to what I think I say.
@evan@evanprodromou There are some hacker spaces that might be open to offering some space! I will poke around and see if I can get you a name and address.
@evanprodromou Are there funds for venue rental? Several day before events use space in hotels near Grand Place: Novotel Bruxelles Grand Place, DoubleTree Brussels, and Hilton Bruxelles Grand Place are popular venues.
@evanprodromou ...and having clicked the link, I see you already linked to this year's Fringe event, so I can probably assume you already saw the 2023 and 24 pages.
I would be interested to know, once you have earned your master's, whether (a) you learned anything new, and (b) whether you feel that it was worth it for you.
@evan I had never thought of that! Interesting to think about how Chinese and Indian restaurants, and Irish pubs, are ubiquitous worldwide. Does that say something about the nature of Irish, Indian, and Chinese culture that generated more expats?
I work for Ampere Computing, but I love maths!
