   It's weird how people don't make the connection between strife in a distant land and popularity of its cuisine in North America and Europe.

   If you've got a new arepa place or an Yemeni or Burmese restaurant starting up near you, that's not a coincidence. That's refugees making a place for themselves far from home.

     @evan Quite true. As an example, many Hungarian restaurants were founded after the Uprising in 1956. Not so many of them are still around.

     @dneary the counter hypothesis that the popularity of Irish pubs was completely unrelated to the massive waves of emigration from Ireland in the last 150+ years seems very unlikely.

     @evan I had never thought of that! Interesting to think about how Chinese and Indian restaurants, and Irish pubs, are ubiquitous worldwide. Does that say something about the nature of Irish, Indian, and Chinese culture that generated more expats?
