I just finished my last exam for the semester in my master's degree courses at Georgia Tech. I have from now until Jan 6 to watch TV, listen to podcasts, and read any book I want. 🎉

Evan Prodromou (evan@cosocial.ca)'s status on Monday, 09-Dec-2024 12:22:40 JST Evan Prodromou My class was CS6400, Database Systems Concepts and Design. As has become a pattern, I came into the class thinking I knew all there was to know about database systems, and I walked away significantly more informed than I was when I started. It was a tough class, with a really sizeable group project, but I really got a lot out of it.

Evan Prodromou (evan@cosocial.ca)'s status on Monday, 09-Dec-2024 12:26:16 JST Evan Prodromou I think if I'm going to work on a side project over the holidays, it would be to design an EERD (extended Entity-Relationship Diagram) for the Activity Streams 2.0 data structures, which have been notoriously difficult to map to a relational database. If I can get it to work, I can use some mechanical mapping procedures to generate a normalized relational database schema. That might be a helpful guide for folks who are building new ActivityPub implementations from scratch.

Evan Prodromou (evan@cosocial.ca)'s status on Monday, 09-Dec-2024 12:27:06 JST Evan Prodromou @dneary Yes, I have learned a lot of new things. Every class so far, from Human-Computer Interface, to Software Architecture and Design, to Database Systems, has been something I thought I knew a lot about, and was surprised to find that I had a lot to learn. Of the three, the HCI one has been the most interesting, since the professor included many journal papers in the reading, including very recent ones.

I would be interested to know, once you have earned your master's, whether (a) you learned anything new, and (b) whether you feel that it was worth it for you.

Evan Prodromou (evan@cosocial.ca)'s status on Monday, 09-Dec-2024 12:31:42 JST Evan Prodromou @dneary Whether it was worth it to me, I don't yet know. One thing I wanted to do is make sure my chosen field of interest, software engineering, appeared on my resume as a formal degree. We'll see if that changes my hiring prospects. Georgia Tech is a well-respected computer science program, #7 in the US, so I hope it helps. If not, I still have the benefits of learning, but the hiring boost from the degree would be nice.
