I think having a focused functional UI also does a lot of heavy lifting. Complex stuff like this just massively sucks with a CLI tool. CLI means I need to memorize functionality, discovery of functionality is awful in a CLI context. With the UI its pretty trivial to learn as you go and there is much less context to hold in your head.

Proxmox strikes a good balance where dropping into the CLI is a click away within the UI to do the handful of unusual things that you don't want to expose on a UI.

idk if tools got better or if I just know more but self hosting feels infinitely easier than it was ~10 years ago.

Proxmox is really nice and makes management of containers and VMs so easy?!
Also big fan of bare LXC containers instead of the added complexity of Docker, esp. for just a NAS at home.

@whitequark it became refreshingly common at least with consumer electronics clients that they refer to "leaded solder" in context of fixing prototypes

I had the so far unsubstantiated vibe that Github CI becoming unusable or highly restricted wouldn't be far off and started considering running my own metal for CI stuff if that direction continues

@whitequark @mntmn yea, they should have left it at the state in 2021 it was already great at that bs back then and everything developed after that point turned into the dystopian mess we have today

This panel scrap is a great demo that FR4 can actually be used for many situations where you need something flexible.

This will not last long in a living hinge but for one time bends that are held in place this works well. Its 0.4mm you can get down to 0.2mm which flexes much more than this.

I find it very funny that none of my friends who visited me the past months questioned or even acknowledged this absolute contraption.

@whitequark @gsuberland I have a vaguely similar setup, though I use smart bulbs only for adjusting light condition, never for the on/off state and have them set to repeat last known state on power up or default to on. Then I switch everything with Shelly wall switches which can be toggled locally with the normal light switch or via WiFi. So if everything is down except power it just works like a normal light switch.

@whitequark One off'ish feels kinda likely. I seen that a few times in the med space despite doing that only briefly. Some sub-assembly was unobtainable so a shoddy "drop-in" that only replicates the features the specific device was using was made as it was easier/cheaper than redesigning the device itself.
Prob. not too different in the defense space?

@whitequark going full time freelance has truly opened my eyes when it comes to the state of software in the embedded space. I always assumed that I write mediocre code at best but the bar for "ready to ship" is in fact so much lower than I could have ever imagined
