@pairko History has valuable lessons for us, but modern technology and democracy make drawing inferences from it somewhat tricky nowadays, but there might be some comparison to draw from then to now in that regards.
Israel relates to pre-EU history quite a bit though in another way since it was one of the last big mistakes (neglecting the U.S. imperial mistakes from the 2nd half of the 20th century) from the age of Western Imperialism imo.
I was expecting that Biden would make a stop in #Ukraine when the trip to Poland was announced.
Coons is (or was) compromised by Koch cash, but he didn't act as badly as did Manchin & Sinema in the 117th Congress so perhaps there's hope for him, idk.
Coons has been Biden’s “other guy” abroad throughout this presidency. To watch the jovial Delawarean operate outside the U.S. is to see him embrace the role of proxy. At the Munich Security Conference this weekend, world leaders flocked to the 59-year-old lawmaker not only to get a sense of U.S. foreign policy — they could also speak to Vice President Kamala Harris or Blinken for that. They sought him out to get a sense of Biden, the man. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/he-s-another-way-in-how-chris-coons-helps-biden-run-the-world/ar-AA17HZUX
Trump wouldn't even go to our D-Day memorial because it was raining. Biden walked around Kyiv while missiles were raining down. https://youtu.be/3CjBGmudwY0
@c9a@cstross IMO, that's not a complicating factor. Weight is what causes road damage so it should be taxed whether EV or ICEV. That might help Americans to consider that they don't need a battery big enough to get them from New York to Florida without charging.
@slightlysarcasticteacher@TonyStark On that note and especially since so many of democracy.town residents seem to reside in the DMV I'll put this recent news story here that reinforces your point.
@Dagny@TonyStark Good politicians need to be boosted so that people don't entirely give up on politics. Politics are part of every human interaction and we need more good politicians imho.
@chiclet@darnell@victorwynne I too don't think that QEII death was top five story of year and I'm not really qualified to have anything other than an opinion on it. Democracy being under attack on the other hand is a global issue to refute your other point. Regrettably, one of their most powerful campaigns is the #WarOnTruth so, yes, it's not on all that many people's radar I suppose. https://www.britannica.com/topic/The-War-on-Democracy-2118720
@darnell@victorwynne If they understood the ramifications we face, they would certainly be pushing for policies that would stop the rich people from endangering their children I like to believe. If the economic justice solution is your major concern about our #ClimateCrisis I would love for you to examine some of the resources on the subject that @citizensclimate has available on their proposed Carbon Fee & Dividend proposal.
Like I said though, the cause is well understood to be wealthy people so many of us are trying the best we can to not put anymore burden on them (of which I'm one).
@victorwynne Sadly, our #ClimateCrisis is a much bigger threat to democracy so that would support the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act the biggest story of 2022 perhaps.
Anyways, would you recommend particular #ClimSciComm scholars and particularly practitioners. Of course I already know @MichaelEMann@kathhayhoe and more famous ones here in U.S. and some like @rahmstorf overseas etc. Anyways welcome.
