     My main conclusion from reading "Prisoners of Geography", a worthwhile read, was that it was the author's view most of the world's great political problems are rooted in some act of hubris by an English aristocrat with a map, a grease pencil, an no real concern for consequences on anyone who was not an English aristocrat.

     History has valuable lessons for us, but modern technology and democracy make drawing inferences from it somewhat tricky nowadays, but there might be some comparison to draw from then to now in that regards.

     Israel relates to pre-EU history quite a bit though in another way since it was one of the last big mistakes (neglecting the U.S. imperial mistakes from the 2nd half of the 20th century) from the age of Western Imperialism imo.

     On that occasion, perhaps we gave a foreign ideologue too much attention, didn't ignore him enough.
     Seem to remember HS history teaching how the countries of Europe came to be ruled by folks more tightly connected to each other than to the people of the countries they ruled (something to do with hemophilia). Seems like a very bad pattern to follow, like it didn't turn out well, but I suppose similar patterns emerge for reasons.

     Don't get me wrong. A cold warrior—I WANT to see malice in every act of the former Soviet Union.
     But, I remember seeing Congress invite that foreign head of state to give a SOTU as if he were the US president in 2015, and thinking "treason".
     In the '80s, the FRG ?? said they would not be the world's battlefield. The world's battlefield seems to have moved here.
