The audacity to call Musk’s acquisition of Twitter the biggest story of the year when Roe v. Wade was overturned. ??

@victorwynne @GreenFire #Twitter is the most over hyped story of the year, not the biggest.

Ranking the biggest stories of 2022:

      ☝?#Russia ?? invades #Ukraine ??, threatens #NATO with nukes

✌️?#SCOTUS overturns #RoeVsWade, shocking gullible politicians

      ?? #Economy, Inflation & Layoffs

?? #Politics around the world (#Democracy under siege)

      ✋? #China ?? threatens #Taiwan ??, latter is a vital supplier of microchips

Those are the top five events of 2022 in my opinion.

Sadly, our #ClimateCrisis is a much bigger threat to democracy so that would support the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act the biggest story of 2022 perhaps.

The replies turned to a discussion of Twitter being the biggest story because it threatens democracy itself. All I can do is laugh at the idea that Twitter is somehow unique in social media.

Forcing someone to carry a pregnancy is a violation of Jewish law, and the Constitution guarantees our freedom to practice religion, and freedom from the dictates of other religions.

The reversal of Roe is a violation of the Constitution, and I cannot think of a greater threat to democracy than that.

@chiclet @victorwynne @GreenFire Most people do not care about the Royal family (many are hostile towards England overall due to history).

All of those items I mentioned affected the US, but with the exception of #RoeVsWade they were all global in nature.

@GreenFire @victorwynne #GlobalWarming / #ClimateChange will never be taken seriously by the masses until an economically viable solution can be implemented.

As soon as you tell people (who are already struggling financially) that we must raise the cost of living in order to save the planet, they become hostile & indifferent (& politicians know this).

Germany is firing up coal plants and importing liquefied natural gas to shore up energy supplies. Activists are carrying out increasingly disruptive protests, gluing themselves to roads and runways.

If they understood the ramifications we face, they would certainly be pushing for policies that would stop the rich people from endangering their children I like to believe. If the economic justice solution is your major concern about our #ClimateCrisis I would love for you to examine some of the resources on the subject that @citizensclimate has available on their proposed Carbon Fee & Dividend proposal.

Like I said though, the cause is well understood to be wealthy people so many of us are trying the best we can to not put anymore burden on them (of which I'm one).

@chiclet @victorwynne @GreenFire Most people are more concerned with Meghan & Harry (who somehow achieved celebrity status) than the Royals. Outside of the United Kingdom ?? they are not considered a major story at all.

Most people do not even bring it up nor do they care to know any info, at least from my travels in North America & Africa.

Democracy is in the news due to elections & the second wave of authoritarians gaining power worldwide.

      @chiclet @victorwynne @GreenFire I am not referring to the #UnitedStates ?? here. #Italy ??, #Hungary ??, #Poland ??, & technically #England ?? too have all drifted more towards authoritarianism.

      Coups have happened in #Guinea ??, #BurkinaFaso ??, #Mali ??, #Sudan ??, #Chad ??, & #Myanmar ?? with attempts thwarted in #GuineaBissau ??, #Gabon ??, #Niger ?? & #Peru ??.

Those are the ones I am aware of right now. Yes, #Democracy is being threatened right now.

The US is an outlier I think when it comes to the Queen since the US openly rebelled against the crown and won independence. Canada and Australia tell a very different story. India a very different story. All had much more attention to this story.

Elections happen all over the world every year. Some shift left, some shift right. "Framing" elections as an existential battle for democracy is mostly an American thing, specifically because of US politics in recent years.

I too don't think that QEII death was top five story of year and I'm not really qualified to have anything other than an opinion on it. Democracy being under attack on the other hand is a global issue to refute your other point. Regrettably, one of their most powerful campaigns is the #WarOnTruth so, yes, it's not on all that many people's radar I suppose. https://www.britannica.com/topic/The-War-on-Democracy-2118720

The War on Democracy | Essay by Madeleine Albright
The most important development of the 20th century was the spread of democracy. The most important lesson was that the tides of freedom will always be opposed. Now and in the future, this warning should be on our minds because democracy is undergoing a new and rigorous round of tests. The honor roll of free countries stopped growing some time ago and has begun to shrink. Doubts about the capacity of democracy to deliver on its promises have deepened as technology has enabled people everywhere to see what others have and they do not, feeding dissatisfaction and fueling anger.
