Say things like this: "Cool! Looks interesting, sucks you are getting some piss poor negative feedback but the Fediverse does like to hurt itself pretty bad with stuff like this. I hope everything goes smoothly. Don’t take the fedi mob seriously."
Where "the fediverse hurting itself" = people in the Fediverse not wanting to connect with everything everywhere all the time
The only way this can be construed as harm to "the Fediverse" is if you're completely infected by capitalist brainworms and can only see failure to grow numbers as "harm" even though there are no shareholders to complain about the lack of optimized growth
"If raw economies of scale are the deciding factor in struggle, then meaningful social change can only come through proletarian uprisings or movements of sufficient size. Hence anything that isn't building up working-class institutions and/or The Party is a waste of time.
But if capitalism is riddled with inefficiencies and potential exploits, then actively being able to search through them to find critical points of leverage is far more effective because it enables force multipliers and attack vectors which can give you capacity on par if not exceeding mass movements."
Cheers to whoever posted this. It's an excellent essay. Yes it's long but it needs that.
South America is burning. Why? Climate change is a big factor, obviously. Also, it's due to previously well-intentioned planting of non-native species which are fire-prone rather than fire-resistant. For example, Bogota planted lots of eucalyptus around the city to prevent erosion during the 20th century.
Just points to the importance of looking to indigenous ecology for cues about how best to adapt to the challenges of #ClimateChange.
"If not for the Big Oil and the plastic industry’s lies and deception, municipalities and states would not have invested in plastic recycling programs and facilities—many of which have been shut down due to foreseeable economic losses. The industry not only misled municipal and state agencies to believe that plastic recycling was a viable solution to plastic waste but also discouraged them from pursuing other, more sustainable waste management strategies (e.g., waste reduction, reuse, bans, alternative materials) in favor of plastic recycling."
Quote from this detailed and well-sourced report from Climate Integrity. Well worth reading and not as long as it looks. The main part of the report is 30 pages, most of which include various illustrations and up to 1/3 of the page given over to citations.
I got used to being able to search ~some~ posts for keywords... now it seems I can't search any. Is it because I'm not using any of the "search options" which I still don't fully understand?
Folks, Amy is a wonderful person and contributes so much to the Fediverse experience! You should follow their account, so you too can experience the #MikMaq word of the day, and you should boost the heck out of their fundraiser so they can get their housing situated.
An article I'm not going to link to: "The way humans evolved may be stopping us from solving climate change"
No doubt it's got some observations from psychology about humans' tendency towards short-term thinking and planning. That may be true, but what's really stopping us from solving climate change is rich and powerful people who simply refuse to do so and instead devote ridiculous amounts of energy and money towards stopping anyone who tries.
@MartyFouts Slavery has existed in multiple settings and under multiple economic systems, but racialized intergenerational chattel slavery (aka the USA variety*) was unique to capitalism. In fact it enriched and advanced capitalist financial tools, see Edward Baptiste "The Half Has Never Been Told" for details.
*Correction: intergenerational racialized chattel slavery occurred all over the Americas, wherever European colonial interests got a secure foothold, basically.
I guess I disagree with what's generally agreed upon, because I don't think we should consider the origins of capitalism as separate from that of mercantilism and colonialism. Like, yes, that's when the East India Companies got going but they didn't spring from the head of Zeus.
I'd like to think I'm responding to what you're saying rather than what other pro-capitalists with whom I've spoken have said. If not, let me know.
You're still beating around the bush. I gather I'm meant to infer that since X is older than Y, that means X is separable from Y. Is that your premise? Racism is older than capitalism, therefore they're disconnected?
