@thomasfuchs I always enjoy the tale of the A20 gate. Whenever you have to write _in the official documentation_ "access to higher memory is controlled by this random line attached to the keyboard" you know someone fucked up.
@dalias@MrDOS As I understand it, the problem is ActivityPub itself. This message, for example, will be delivered to "activitystreams#Public" with you two and "Two9A's followers list" in Cc.
When the message is sent by Hachyderm, it goes through my followers and extracts the instances' Public inboxes, so as not to flood a particular instance with X copies of the same message.
If one of my followers is, say, on mastodon.green and that instance is blocking Hachyderm, .green will drop the message from its Public inbox, and it won't get routed on to my follower. It also won't be in .green's local copy of the thread, and that's the problem here.
There's probably something that can be done about that last part... cc @thisismissem to see if she has any thoughts.
@badnetmask We were put up in a hotel by the airline overnight after a missed connection at Istanbul; we have the entry and exit stamps on our passports, but can we claim to have _visited_ if the hotel and airport shuttle were all we saw?
@thomasfuchs I was (for a number of years) a moderator on /r/collapse; there's still (last I looked) wording in the sub's sidebar that I wrote, to the effect of:
"Overindulging in news about the collapse of civilization may be detrimental to your mental health."
@skinnylatte Been seeing these crop up recently (LTT did a video on them too), but I worry about the longevity of storage on SSD. My old spinning-rust NAS has been turned off for a while, but I know the data's still there; can't say the same for SSDs which have been off for a long time.
@skinnylatte Nae stress, thanks for taking the time; he's already found a decent Pakistani place in IST from the Google Maps reviews, so I'll write down anywhere else he finds particularly good.
@skinnylatte Mm, Evan Edinger has a whole set of videos on his tribulations on the journey to British citizenship; this video in particular talks about the total cost of the steps/applications/visas involved. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvzTOmEPYyE
My wife's thankfully out the other side of that whole process, and we can finally burn six years of post and letters we've been saving as proofs of continual residence...
@skinnylatte@amydentata I've lamented in the past how there doesn't seem to be another place like /r/ukpolitics for current events where I am in the world... Let me dig the hazmat suit out of storage and try it out later.
@mattly There's a whiff of bad development lifecycle to this one in particular, I feel, especially with county coming after state. It smacks of a design being produced with a typo on that field, and a dev team with zero power to push back on a design once it's Come Down From On High.
