@killyourfm@JoeRess I've been getting better and better at packing the various storage options (under seat, luggage box, my backpack) on my motorcycle. It feels like unloading a clown car when I get home with a couple hundred bucks worth of groceries! 😅
@gamingonlinux@killyourfm even if you want to raise objections about not a Windows device, you absolutely CAN rock a Deck as a Windows device. When it launched, a lot of people did exactly that, reflexively, before everybody figured out "this thing is actually great the way it ships."
@killyourfm another thing I'll point out: "we didn't have benchmarks on hand from similar classes of device" is no excuse. When I had the same issue, I would source widely available benchmarks to put against my own direct benchmarks of the device under test, and cite the sources I pulled from.
@killyourfm I got yelled at by angry turbo gamers a couple of times when I did exactly that while I was at Ars. But it isn't exactly difficult to get yourself yelled at by turbo gamers, IME...
@killyourfm personally, I'd have benched it against *both*, with text explaining that the laptop was a bit of a joker, but was included to demonstrate the discrepancy between classes of device.
I used to do the same thing with laptop CPUs and GPUs vs their desktop counterparts, because so many people have absolutely no idea that a laptop i7 is so much slower than a desktop i7, a laptop RTX is so much slower than a desktop RTX, etc.
@killyourfm 4K just isn't worth it at this stage of tech, IMO. I've always been a fan of consistent frame rate (and not cooking an entire room) over running the highest rez possible.
This also triggered a rebrand of the Model 3 Performance, which is now "Scooty Puff Sr: The Doom-Bringer."
I don't think that magnet is gonna stay in place for long, though. Probably gonna have to swap that out for another transparent sticker on the rear glass.
I bought myself a Christmas present this year. Behold: it's Scooty Puff Jr! This is a CSC / Cineco / Zongshen E-RT3 all-electric maxi scooter, curb weight 550lbs, top speed with me on it 78mph.
@amszmidt it took THIRTEEN YEARS to convince the man that "voluntary pedophilia" was not harmful. Which would be one thing if it was something he thought, in the privacy of his own head, and occasionally talked with friends about privately.
But no, he professes this stuff publicly, with no regard for the weight his own public profile puts behind his words EVEN WHEN THEY'RE EXTREMELY HARMFUL. I don't think he is a deliberately malicious person, but he is unfit to lead. Period.
The FSF's got a lot of damn nerve, asking me for EXTRA money on top of my $140/yr associate membership right now.
Letting RMS just sashay his way as publicly as possible back into the lead role--with neither significant remorse expressed nor visible changes made--put this one directly in the "no, hell no, and in fact get out of my damn office" pile.
@lattera I burned my palm resting it on a too-warm-but-not-so-hot-I-couldn't-stand-it laptop keyboard back in the early oughts. Ignored it being "uncomfortably warm" for about a year, when "uncomfortably warm" started being "painfully hot" even though the actual temperatures hadn't changed.
That's how I got my "hot hand" I couldn't even bear to rest on my wife's leg for long without icing it. Took more than a decade to ALMOST-fully heal.
I'm probably never going to write the actual article I'd originally intended these charts for. But if you want to see the difference between latencies between #OpenZFS and #btrfs on an eight-drive system that's creating and replicating automated snapshots regularly, here ya go.
We're looking at fio random access, limited to (simultaneous) 8MiB/sec read and 23.0MiB/sec write. The system has eight 12TB Ironwolf rust drives, in four ZFS mirrors vs one eight-wide btrfs-raid1.
Hi! I'm Jim Salter, aka mercenary_sysadmin, aka "the biggest ZFS stan on the planet."I am *not* Jim Salter, the Associated Press reporter based in Missouri. That's a different guy, and he hides from the Internet.
