@tarajdactyl @seldo @mattl usernames are important to people, servers/instances make that harder. Either you use/force the use of a personal domain name (which won’t scale to publications and is annoying/wrong to many people) or you have a confusing mess of usernames. I have fairly reasonable expectation that I’m talking to you right now but who knows? Now scale that feeling to people fleeing Twttr. En masse.

@mattl people are SO STRESSED about having to pick a server, I absolutely do not understand it, I believe they find it difficult but I find it impossible to fathom why.

The clear message I am getting from Bluesky is that black people felt unsafe on mastodon. Black Twitter was a huge part of what made it special, and it's been notably absent on mastodon. I will be sad if mastodon loses to a less-open alternative because it couldn't figure out how to be welcoming to everyone.

@seldo I feel like a majority of users don’t want to worry about finding people, claiming usernames, etc.

I wish I’d spoken up at the time but I always felt Fediverse stuff was better when the vast majority of users were on a single instance.

@emmanuel Exciting news about 2600 going to sell digital subscriptions via your own site. If there's an option for lifetime subscribers to pay a little extra and get those in addition to the print copies and digests, I'd be interested in that.

So you probably have a good decade of shitposting until their server dies because there's no way they're sending that email AND taking backups.

@ernie maybe GNOME 3 was released to distros too early, or they did a poor job of having it simply replace GNOME 2, but GNOME 3 got really pretty good and pretty fast. For all the user-focused issues with desktop Linux, GNOME isn't one.
