Either you use/force the use of a personal domain name (which won’t scale to publications and is annoying/wrong to many people) or you have a confusing mess of usernames. I have fairly reasonable expectation that I’m talking to you right now but who knows? Now scale that feeling to people fleeing Twttr. En masse.
