The thing where YouTubers replace the audio of words the algorithm doesn't like with crackling or whatever but show them on screen... Surely that's going to get them demonetised anyway? Why not just keep the bloody words in anyway so I don't have to use OCR to attempt to read them and sod the bottom line.

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Thursday, 13-Jun-2024 06:20:46 JST Kara Goldfinch If you use TinySpell with NVDA and notice that choosing a correction doesn't replace the word that's being typed, uncheck NVDA's option "Handle keys from other applications" in keyboard settings.
Note you need that setting checked for NVDA remote to work properly.
Thanks @tspivey for the tip.
@FreakyFwoof you'll probably find this useful. -

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Saturday, 08-Jun-2024 21:03:48 JST Kara Goldfinch Our apple tree has apples on it! We bought a golden delicious tree on impulse a couple of years ago and we didn't think it'd grow any. Apparently you need more than one for them to grow apples, but there's six on it.
I can't wait to try them. -

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Thursday, 06-Jun-2024 05:11:13 JST Kara Goldfinch The power went out earlier, so now someone's burglar alarm's going off and no one's home to stop it.
It's one of those annoying ones that stops every now and again just long enough to make you think it's been switched off. Then it starts up again. -

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Wednesday, 05-Jun-2024 19:08:12 JST Kara Goldfinch I know about the third-party tutorials in the App Store, but the huge problem with that is you need to know how to use voiceover to download them in the first place.
Imagine if JAWS or NVDA didn't come with any built-in help and you had to learn how to use them through cobbling together what you read from various third-party websites and whatnot.
There is an iOS manual buried somewhere with a small VO section but it's next to useless. -

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Wednesday, 05-Jun-2024 19:07:58 JST Kara Goldfinch I was thinking yesterday while setting up my mum's new iPhone, if that was my first time typing on a touchscreen and I didn't know any better, I'd probably give up to it and just use the dictation function like I see a lot do. It really is a horrible experience typing with VoiceOver in its default state.
There's literally no information during setup or even in settings to tell you what the various typing modes mean, or even how to choose one. When I started to use voiceover in late 2009 not long after it was first released, there was just "standard typing mode", not even any dictation so I just had to put up with it, and it was annoying. Then "Touch typing mode" came out sometime in 2010. There's still no built-in VoiceOver tutorial or any help at all apart from the VoiceOver practice function, and that's just like keyboard help mode in any other screen reader. That's another kettle of fish entirely though. -

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Friday, 31-May-2024 15:29:06 JST Kara Goldfinch Two cats yowling outside woke me up. At least I hope it was two of them because the second one always started its howl halfway through the first one's so it sounded like there was one cat with two voices pitched about a third apart. I don't think there's any two headed cats about.

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Friday, 31-May-2024 09:00:57 JST Kara Goldfinch I think it'd be awesome if there was an interactive fiction interpreter that had an interface similar to Mushclient or VIPMud with input and output edit fields you could navigate like any other edit control.
I have no idea how to even begin making such a thing, so if anyone wants to take that idea and run with it, feel free. -

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Thursday, 30-May-2024 06:59:10 JST Kara Goldfinch What are your favourite Foobar2000 components?
Mine are FFmpeg Decoder Wrapper which can play all sorts of random file formats that FFmpeg can support (bit of a pain to set up), Game Music Emu Decoder, and MIDI Player. youTube Source is quite cool as well but I don't use it much. -

Wikipedia articles read so much better with VO in safari now they've finally took the edit section links out of the heading tags. -

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Tuesday, 21-May-2024 16:23:15 JST Kara Goldfinch I tried Copilot for maybe the second time yesterday. I had to launch it a few times before I could use the UI with NVDA, and after finally beating it into submition, turns out I could've found out what I wanted to know by just googling for it.
I still don't get why it needs a dedicated key or these new Copilot+ laptops. They call them PCs but to me that's a desktop. -

Kara Goldfinch (karalg84@dragonscave.space)'s status on Sunday, 19-May-2024 23:40:35 JST Kara Goldfinch Is there an online group for blind musicians that isn't Facebook? So an e-mail list, forum, discord server etc?
I don't mean one dedicated to your favourite DAW of choice, I'm in a couple of those already. I mean just a general musicians group if that makes sense. -
