    A long time ago I had a simple idea for a tech demo of a game, attempting to replicate a sense of touch by using short, transparent icons to indicate things happening out of vision range.
    I think this was after CoD:MW was released, I don't know if I'd played it at that point, but pretty sure I had played CoD1, and probably other things with hit direction indicators, so it wasn't entirely original, but it was definitely expanding upon that to a level that didn't exist at the time - and as far as I know, still doesn't.
    The first "scene" I had in mind for it was you as a kid in a warzone, you pick up a gun and try to fire it, but the recoil knocks you over, and you can feel the gun leave your hand as you're blown back, so you'd get an indication of that.

    Not too long after that, a couple of months or so, I was at PyCon and went to the dinner afterward (for free, because I was volunteering), and was telling someone about it there, and they thought what I wanted was "no UI", and that meant no icons either, because they're UI, so they were saying "you could have the camera force look to your empty hands [after the initial shock] to show it".
    I don't know how they managed to misunderstand it so completely, but I do clearly remember that at that moment I thought "there's no point talking to this person; he has no imagination".

    @Suiseiseki You're thinking of javascript. Python is generally braindead easy; it's for when I want to write something without thinking and have it still do what I wanted. Usually there is one,and preferably only one, obvious way to do things. This is the obvious behaviour; just not the most convenient.

    Python's dict splice ({a}|{b}) does not recursively splice dicts:

    @Inginsub @istvan @adiz @MK2boogaloo mdesu is just a shell script, with deps on basically just curl, jq and fzf, plus whatever image viewer (defaults to sxiv).
    IIRC the problem he had was one of fzf's deps.

    Really not sure who the target market for a certificate expiry notification service is
    Like if you're using certs that means you have a domain, which is something you can just set up a fucking cron job to openssl s_client against daily.

      Since its inception, Let’s Encrypt has been sending expiration notification emails to subscribers that have provided an email address to us via the ACME API. This service ended on June 4, 2025. The decision to end the service is the result of the following factors: Over the past 10 years more and more of our subscribers have been able to put reliable automation into place for certificate renewal. Providing expiration notification emails means that we have to retain millions of email addresses connected to issuance records.

    This complex moral choice is actually a complex *strategic* choice... If it shows up as a random event. You can trigger it manually but in that case you must always choose the recond option or you wasted a precious action.
    Also it's actually somewhat uncommon because IIRC you can only get this event if you haven't wiped Uesugi yet, which basically means going through the hannies, which nobody wants to do because it's fucking hannies.
