@meso @iska At least it's written in .NET core and doesn't need any proprietary MS extensions. Mono should be able to run it. -

@georgia From the perspective of a user? Probably. A lot of the ridiculously looking sites made for fun are gone, browser games are usually really bad and everything is behind a bunch of boats and ads.
If you view the Internet from the perspective of someone that might want to host something, there are more options and things to do. And that's not meant in a bad "boilerplate" way. -

Why do most of the Mastadon users have physically repulsive and outright revolting avatars? Who wants to look at those? Do they really want to be seen as the guys with ugly avatars to others? Is this a fetish or kink for them? -

@sepples I made an account for following artists months ago after trying multiple email providers, because Xitter blocks my self-hosted one. The timelines are complete garbage, Musks nonsense gets showed in my face all the time even if I don't even follow him.
For art, it's pretty good, but to make it usable it takes a lot of effort and blocking people talking about things you don't want instantly, as the algorithm will just feed it non-stop. Muting words and topics does not work. -

@ins0mniak @gatewaypundit_official
>They're like the Soviets were but with pride flags.
That is a very great way to put it. Europe has been slowly radicalizing over the last 5-10 years and this is the way some of the bigger governments decided to go about it. It's not unusual to be seen as a weirdo, if you don't read and/or trust mass media (state owned or not). Casting doubt makes you a rebel basically immediately.
For some reason there's this divide of privacy and freedom of speech, where privacy is generally good and respected by law enforcement, which is good for hosting your personal cloud. But the moment you anger a politician with your opinion, or your opinions are too spicy, your privacy is out the window.
>I have everything to move my server back into the States, majestic12 is currently in Luxumborg.
You might want to periodically check your email for some non-invoice emails from BuyVM. Somewhere in the next 6 months the LUX will be moved live to either the Netherlands or Switzerland. Netherlands isn't really known for it's good opinions on privacy and actively prosecuted "hate speech" (probably not something you would want to associate with). Switzerland does have good privacy laws, so that is the better currently preferred option.
>I don't know what I was thinking other than that was the only available server on frantech at the time and may have been drinking.
Maybe anti-dmca. That's basically the only good thing LUX has going for it along with the average privacy laws. -

@ins0mniak @gatewaypundit_official All it takes is to host content from within the EU and be big enough to fulfill the requirements around DSA and the other act nobody remembers the name of. Or if the company is a gatekeeper, the company is forced to moderate content even when operating completely outside of the EU.
They can basically force social media companies to split their "network" in half and block the "bad" content only in EU. Same thing with their required independent fact checkers and requirements to remove content when ordered by law enforcement within 24 hours with huge fines when breaking those rules.
This kind of stupidity is the sole reason why I don't host any user created content, including FluffyTail, in the EU. There's some kind of requirement in the DSA based on number of users with a vague definition when it comes to federated networks. And arguing with law enforcement that I in fact don't host thousands of users only because some random post from Poast and adjacent got their attention isn't my thing. The likelihood is very small, but I don't like taking unnecessary chances. -

@dcc @ins0mniak @NonPlayableClown @vic It literally doesn't. I've tried to fix it for months before just giving up. It's a broken mess and the "meta" part of didn't seem to work after I updated somewhere in September. It always just returned results from one engine even though it showed that other ones responded. -

@7666 Yeah, I've been fighting performance issues since I moved the Pleroma DB to a slab and there's basically no way to solve it. It just chokes randomly for a few minutes multiple times a day and comes back. Even the OS SSD sometimes just gives up. -

@7666 I have a 20GB DB and a 12 GB lvmcache in front of it. Basically everything hits the cache, but it chokes anyway (both the slab and the OS SSD). -

@7666 It's probably an IOPS quota over some time frame, many VPS providers do that. OVH being one of the worst offenders. After around 2GB, their additional disk throttle to 12,10,8,4 MB/s of sustained read or write. Slowly throttling down as you keep using the disk.
What I usually see is an almost increase in disk backlog to around 5-10 seconds for 15-20 minutes and then it goes back to normal. A reliable way to trigger it is to open a few tabs of random bigger threads, or make many search queries. It's not related to an increase in network traffic/requests, dmcache deciding to write the dirty pages to the primary disk or PostgreSQL deciding to do DB maintenance. It just happens out of nowhere unprovoked.

@7666 Also about the Miami storage slab being completely dead and corrupted. From what Fran said in Discord, they only have a single slab node there, so if the FS (probably ZFS) can't recover at least some of it, it's probably gone. The way he said it, implies to me that there's basically no backup other than the RAID 10 redundancy. -
