A question regarding WhatsApp, which is my only tie to Meta. Given Meta's general behavior, and its more specific one since Jan 20, I would gladly delete the app but feel annoyed at the perspective that my family won't understand why, nor, for part of it, be sensible to the usual arguments, nor install Signal. (They say they have nothing to hide.)
Can you share good or bad experiences in this direction? Do you have any suggestion? Any recommendation?

@tract_linguistes @pier344 @MarCandea Un ami espagnol m'a dit plusieurs fois à quel point cette question de l'orthographe du français lui était bizarre, que personne (on se comprend) en Espagne ne fait de fautes d'orthographe comme cela a lieu en France. Ce n'est tout simplement pas un sujet là-bas !

I am sorry but these figures make no sense. Medals, publications, prizes reflect the sociology, and the zones of power, but say little about the advancement of knowledge.

You can do better to promote science.
1. Have its discoveries explained to the public (see the antivaxx wave at the beginning of the COVID pandemic?)
2. Have its findings pass into law when it comes about health or safety issues (speed limits, chemicals,...)
3. Help creating a community of researchers which is based on cooperation, not competition.

As a matter of fact, president Macron has been elected twice with a small majority of the electoral vote, against a far-right candidate, with the explicit promise that he would be the dam against far-right.

Tonight, he is ready to have a law passed that drastically restricts the rights of foreign people in France, under a warm round of applause of the far-right he had pledged to contain.

This is a sad night for France.
This is a sad night for democracy.
This is a sad night for the world.

10. Antagonistes

Petit à petit, Stéphane entrevoyait les contradictions qui se jouaient en lui. Son besoin de reconnaissance avait guidé sa vie professionnelle, de sa thèse de statistiques catégoriques à son poste de directeur des études statistiques du Neuroland. Il se rappelait parfois les grandes randonnées qu'il faisait avec ses amis lorsqu'il avait une vingtaine d'années. Quelques semaines coupés du monde, au milieu de paysages ravagés et pourtant stupéfiants. Des nuits à rêver sous un ciel auquel la Grande Extinction — ces trois années où les générateurs d'électricité ne fonctionnaient que par intermittence — avait rendu ses étoiles.

De ces deux désirs antagonistes, avait-il fait le bon choix ?
