Nobody can take this from me. I read for my two year old all the time. For a few weeks now we go to the library together to discover new books.

It's fun. It's adorable. It's quality time. It's bonding. It's extremely important.

The argument that it's about their kid's privacy doesn't impresses anyone. But okay these people post images of their kids in their WhatsApp stories and have them as a profile picture. So their kid's privacy seems to be irrelevant for them. 🫠

I get called out here because I say #Pixelfed is a mess.

That's awesome bit weird. Objectively it's an unfinished product with missing features, missing UI and UX polish and even @dansup says the current web interface isn't good and he's working on something new.

We want Pixelfed to be not only an alternative to bigger platforms but to be the best choice. Shouldn't we be open then about things that don't work properly or are implemented poorly?

Defending Dan because he does most of the work on his own isn't what helps anyone. Being aggressive towards people that point out problems isn't helpful at all too.

Don't pretend Pixelfed is without errors. Don't pretend the current state is good.
It's an okayish start but there is a really long way to make it a good product.

But it will never become something good if we don't point out that the current state is a mess. Even if you probably could argue that the wording is a bit harsh.

As a developer for 18 years myself I can say you putting on white gloves when criticizing a project will don't move anything. So don't act like we're in Kindergarten here.

I think it's okay to generate alternative text for images with AI. Preferably locally. But please PLEASE at least read what was generated.

Oftentimes a small detail is wrong and completely changes the meaning. Sometimes it's completely wrong. Or if you post screenshots of games or stuff change "a man", "a woman" or "a group of people" with the actual names.

I know alternative text is time consuming sometimes, but it's important for a large portion of users.

So please take the time to read what was generated and correct mistakes or add nuances. It only takes a small amount of extra time but helps a lot.

I hate the time of the year where I can't leave the house because everyone throws around explosives.

And I hate that the authorities not only ignore this but actively encourages it by allowing stores to sell this stuff early.

I wish the main topic for a large portion of Mastodon users wouldn't be other social networks.

It's so exhausting permanently have to read something about some network similar to Mastodon.

@css I'm definitely with you here, but it's talked about as it were available everywhere. Especially in Tutorials that often only mention it as a side note.

But the worst part for me as a developer is, that I can't read these tutorials, as they always just include Codepens that do nothing on my iPhone. Not a single video or at least an explanation.

It's so sad many Web Developers act in a way like Anchor Positioning and Scroll-Driven Animations are widely supported.

That excludes so many people. Not only these that want to make stuff for everyone, but also many people with older browsers (we're speaking of weeks and months not years) or different browsers than Chromium based browsers.

Dear #WebDev bubble: Please keep in mind that not everyone uses the latest Chrome version.

Constantly torn between "I really loved backend development!" and "I want everything to be pretty and accessible in frontend!". 😅

I have to be honest: Frontend Development is not as fun because you have to think about so many things. But it's much more rewarding for me and it's the stuff people see.

If I refactor the backend to be a bit faster, people will notice at first but after that it's just normal.
If you create a beautiful UI that is accessible, every person will experience it every time they use the interface.
