Apparently some people in Minnesota don't appear to have gotten that memo and there is an outbreak of about 40 confirmed cases, mostly down around MPLS. If a high enough percentage of the population gets vaccinated, you get herd immunity and nobody gets it, but people have been increasingly stupid about vaccines in the last decade or so and the vaccination rates have dropped in many states to the point where you now get flare ups of a disease which was virtually eradicated (and could be again).

My great aunt Mae, who only has a footstone, died of Measles of all things when she was three, while her mother was pregnant with my grandma. Measles, yeah, that is a thing you can die of, if you don't get the now widely available MMR vaccine.

Feeling better today. Slept until afternoon and feel generally fine, just little energy. Went for a short walk in the town cemetery with my aunt who is starting to take in the planters from the family graves now that it is after labor day. Some of those family members died of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis.

For fuck sake, get vaccine. Get your MMR, get your TDAP and HPV and get your damn Covid boosters. Its just absurd how much less death and illness people could be dealing with if everyone just rolled up their sleeves once in a while.

Covid isn't over. Covid will probably never be over, but there is a ton of things you can do to reduce the chance that it screws you over and regular vaccination is one of them.

@DrOinFLA I don't know how anyone buys this brand ever again given the poor state of affairs documented in 50+ citations against the facility. After a certain point of not bringing things up to spec and keeping them there, we need a health inspection system that actually shuts facilities down cold for unsafe operation.

Israel is brazenly launching attacks deep into Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and Iran and it is doing so with US made jets and precision weapons systems. Israel is basically at war with everyone and the notion that this is some sort of localized conflict between narrowly defined parties strains credulity. The US is letting Israel engage in open acts of war with Iran, a huge nation state more than 10 times Israel's population and one which can have at least limited nuclear capability any time it wants.

Probably the biggest story of the moment:

Israel launched an airstrike attack on a major Hamas military figure in Beirut, Lebanon and followed it up with the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political wing of Hamas and one of the chief contenders for the leadership of any future sovereign Palestinian state along with Abbas and Marwan Barhgout, who is in an Israeli prison. Haniyeh was in Tehran at this time to attend the inauguration of Iran's president.

The US is letting Israel conduct attacks on at least 4 nations with a combined population of ~150 million people. It's just insane that the US is writing an open check for this sort of activity.

@pmonks @Dangerous_beans The wealth of nations buys a lot of free sandwiches and as a guy whose family owns 3 houses and 6 cars, I'm fully in favor of a universal basic income, universal healthcare and many other things you probably sneer at. I read Heinlein and Rand and all the rest in my youth. Then I grew up and saw how much misery in society was causes by rigid doctrinal thinking.

@megatronicthronbanks It's not a vaccine. It's an injected drug which needs to be administered every six months or so to maintain immunity.

Also, people living in subsistence in sub-Saharan Africa aren't noted for their ability to hop on a plane every time they need medical care.

@pmonks @Dangerous_beans Capitalist structuring of certain industries produces terrible results for society. It creates situations for all which none want to live under, even those rich enough to afford the very best.

And no, I'm not a communist. We live in an era of absurd abundance and if a society's ultimate aim isn't the elimination of abject human misery, then we're doing something very wrong.

@pmonks @Dangerous_beans Gilead makes something like $20b in profits annually. They could afford to say "fuck it, we're just doing this one for human goodness" and continue on.

A study concluded it could be mass produced for about $30 and sold at a profit for $40. About 60 million people would probably need it immediately, so we're still talking hundreds of millions of dollars in annual profits for the foreseeable future.

So, Gilead has a drug which when given twice a year effectively prevents 100% of all HIV infections. That's it, roll up your sleeve and get jabbed twice a year and never have to worry about AIDS. It is cheap to make, but instead of being credited as the company which ended AIDS globally, Gilead is looking to profit from it as much as possible. Humanity has the technical capability to end a horrible disease, and it won't because of capitalist reasons...

AIDS killed ~630k people last year.

@GossiTheDog In particular, not very helpful for WiFi connected systems (laptops) without Ethernet, as I've seen a lot of laptops which only establish connections once the desktop has been reached.

@samhainnight @w7voa I wonder how many people Biden has exposed in recent days to Covid? He doesn't wear a mask and they did initial confirmation via what has been described as a home test (typically an LFT) and are still awaiting PCR testing. Unless they're using a home molecular test, LFTs do not typically test positive at start of symptoms, which means that Biden has likely been spreading Covid for days. And, by heading to Delaware, rather than isolating in place, he's exposing more people.

Joe Biden, more than any other individual on the planet, has made it possible for Israel to enact their genocidal campaign in Gaza. Every day, he gives me new reasons to not vote for him. Today he talks about his Zionism and claims he's done more for the Palestinian people than anyone. He's done more to provide Israel with the 500-2000k pound bombs than anybody else which have leveled more than 60% of Gaza's structures and killed tens of thousands and civilians and maimed perhaps 4x that many.

@thomasfuchs I remember these and at the time it was actually imo a fairly smart way of getting images into computers, given that a lot of computers had just serial, parallel and a limited number of USB ports. USB mass storage devices profiles weren't really much of a thing at the time.
