Or when that same law stopped them from toppling governments abroad to put friendy regimes in charge, like Pinochet.

There has never been such a thing as a n "international law". There has been the US imposing its power and doing whatever it wants.

The only difference is now they do it in the open.

Well, the so called "rules based international order" has always been "The US imposes the order and makes the rules" so yeah, pretty much.
