Today I learned that my colleagues refer to the method I discovered for easily inserting a temperature probe into compost as "Jules's wiggly worm trick", and while I suppose I always wanted a scientific method named after me I wish it hadn't been this one

I would like to thank Apple for giving me the best laugh I've had in ages by a) releasing a product so ridiculous it was immediately christened the iScrotum by the internet b) causing my wife, an IT professional who should really have known better, to Google "i scrotum" in search of a picture and be startled by the predictable results

Someone pretty famous doing important work joined the Fediverse yesterday, and this is in no way a criticism of them but it's been really jarring watching them import what has clearly been a successful strategy on corporate algorithmic social media wholesale. Started the day getting stabbed in each arm to get my flu and covid jabs. I'm extremely proud of my brave wife @SaintlySin for doing the same in spite of being needle phobic, and continue to be cross at the government for restricting access to free jabs so we had to pay over £100 each to protect ourselves and those more vulnerable than us.

Vaccines save lives folks, get as many of them as you can.

I do have to say the restrictions on access to free vaccines in the UK to only those over the age of 75 are a mistake on every level, a misunderstanding of how public health works and likely to be a complete failure by the government's own cost saving metrics which seems like all they value. The people who can afford to spend a spare £100 (and Lord knows we barely can) are probably not the ones who are most likely to be exposed to

@skinnylatte between the ages of about 11-14 I had a boyfriend. We'd hang out together at lunchbreaks and in the park at weekends and read science fiction books to each other. Then he moved away and we lost touch, other boys tried to date me and I was very much "wtf, why do they want to do all this kissing stuff, when do we get to the good bit where we just read books together?" If people have just come here from Bluesky. Or finally got around to closing their Airbnb account. Or leaving Meta or whatever. Don't immediately jump on them to tell them they should have done it sooner, say well done for doing it now. Or, y'know, saying nothing at all is also an option that exists.

I think what a lot of people who go "Mastodon is just a lefty echo chamber for people who can't handle debate!" don't understand is that not everyone uses social media the same way and most of us don't see Oxbridge debating society type arguments as a leisure activity. Normal people are just here to laugh at some memes, maybe see some cat pictures, discover a new band or learn some facts about sea creatures. Not everything has to be about challenging the foundations of your ideology.
