When Doom 3 shipped twenty years ago, I remember we were all quite proud of the achievement over at id.
There was already a shadow though, we knew HL2 was going to ship a few months later, and it was doing great works of world building and storytelling, something that seemed permanently out of reach for us.
Too much sacrificed to the perfection of technical execution.
PSA - If your Steam Deck or Steam on Linux has started failing to download or launch Proton games, you may have caught a bad config from Valve's servers.
We believe the problem is fixed now, but you need to delete a cache file locally (`~/.steam/steam/userdata/<steamid>/config/compat.vdf` where <steamid> is your id).
@dotstdy@wolfpld I run into a similar problem with gitlab runners. I sort of make it a requirement that I can ssh (or rdp to windows hosts), go to wherever it's building and fiddle with stuff locally until I have something that works.
I see some people mention "it passed QA checks" in reference to the xv backdoor .. You have no idea how the sausage is made, do you?
Even if someone casually looked at the particular commit (I doubt anyone did), that one line edit in the build script looks just like any od the other autotools garbage.
Ouch, so frustrating. Diagnosing and fixing github over https authentication problems is the worst. Typically after you clone a public repo and it'll never let you use your write access for push afterwards.
@SheepZone it's not officially supported either, but I hear it fares much better. Last time we looked at it there were concerns about performance overhead in some situations.
@thomasfuchs surely you don't mean iOS. It may have an open source lineage, and some bits are still open, but it can't be reasonably qualified as "open source".
