This not so-secret Secret Garden is a real place and really looks like this. Located at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, it is a special gem. Photo taken using iPhone 13 with no enhancements. We were knocked out!
I taught myself crochet from lots of Youtube videos, just so I could use scrap wool yarn to make a round thing, soak it in slip, fling it onto a slump mold, and then turn it into a bowl-type thingy. (photos attached)
Lessons are being learned as I work through this process. I'm slowly inching towards success.
I am a beginning knitter and recently went on a cowl-knitting binge. It's a great way to practice new stitches (seed and cable) and to stop doomscrolling. It took until my third cable-stitched cowl before I got the hang of unstitching mistakes -- so easy for my mind to wander and miss a twist! Photos show off my four cowls.
@TheConversationUS When a friend of mine was dying of cancer, I provided her with meals and kept her company while she ate and then I cleaned up. I emptied her cats' litter box even though I'm not a cat person. I took her dog on walks (I'm a dog person). I weeded her garden. And she tried to teach me some card games to keep her mind off the pain. She didn't need or want fuzzy socks, she needed and wanted my company and practical actions.
This is the second season of my mini wildflower meadow on our front yard extension. It used to be just weeds and now it's covered in flowers. My neighbors thought I was crazy but now they are very complimentary.
There is a volunteer tomato plant growing in my wildflower garden. I've never grown tomatoes in that space. I'm letting it stay. Maybe it will be productive, but it will have to outcompete the nearby purple coneflowers that are reaching maturation. (photo attached)
1. I made my first woven basket at a workshop held at the Michigan Folk School in Ann Arbor. The tips of my fingers are numb, but it was a very enjoyable day in the beautiful countryside. (photo attached)
2. It's the longest my dog has ever been in the house by herself. No mishaps!! Hurray!!
3. Thankfully, I had leftovers that I could eat for dinner. My fingers would have a hard time cooking from the brutality of weaving rattan.
1. Hot out of the kiln: two little pots that are kind of a set. I really like how they turned out. (photo attached)
2. Two nice walks with my dog today, in between the rains.
3. Looking forward to a hot Friday afternoon and evening in Ypsilanti, Michigan: first up is old-timey string band music; and then a solo ceramic exhibition of a friend and fellow potter.
@holsta@futurebird I was on various online dating sites for four miserable years, where I focused on top 90% matches. It was one horrible first date after another. I then decided the algorithm was for shit, and looked at the bottom 30%. That's where I found my husband nearly 13 years ago. He encouraged me to write a blog about it. Yesterday, there was a HUGE surprise that occurred in the pottery studio. A fellow potter's pot that she made the previous day had a little seedling growing from the inside wall. She didn't plant it there--it just happened. She was using reclaimed clay, and all sorts of things fall into it--apparently including little airborne seeds. She carved some leaves into the outside of her pot (it will become a coffee mug) to commemorate the brave little seedling. (photos attached)
