Mastodon is trying to store the whole world in its backpack. That's neither decentralizing nor will it work. Decentralization is about how to coexist with others, not about living alone without them. I am not talking about the philosophy of Mastodon but about its technical decision regarding remote content retention. #mastodon#decentralization
The US sending anti-personnel landmines to Ukraine is insane. I live in Korea, a country with countless landmines in the DMZ that even Koreans tend to ignore. Anti-personnel landmines should be banned worldwide! Now I hate Joe Biden. #Ukraine
There are still many low-cost coffee vendors (just a little over $1) and $1 pastry stands at subway stations. Even though many locals complain that Seoul’s cost of living has risen dramatically, it is still a very economical city compared to major cities in other developed western countries, though fruits and meats are significantly more expensive.
But don't expect the pastries to be like those from Western countries. They are very much an Asian style of bread. Western staples like sourdough, water-boiled bagels, unprocessed cheeses, and fruits like avocado are less common and often come with a hefty ‘foreigner price’ here, as they are not very popular.
Whom would you want as your boss: a corrupt boss who is harmful to society and can pay you double or even triple the minimum wage, or an honest but incompetent boss who can barely pay you the minimum wage - or sometimes even less? Based on my limited knowledge of history, it seems that the public has consistently chosen the first option.
Democracy is not designed for a well-educated elite who don’t need to worry about their next rent payment or food for the coming week. It is for and by average or below-average people with lower incomes and less education. Also elections cannot be guaranteed to produce the most efficient and beneficial outcomes. I am very surprised that it has survived and is run by the richest countries, even though many other political systems have failed.
@thinkpad I can't fully agree, but it's an interesting perspective. I see it as a failure of social media, which only reflects a small group of people's messages and mistakenly judges them as representing everyone's opinion.
Python syntax has changed a lot since I moved to Rust. Now, Python code can show types, even though the compiler doesn’t actually use them. If developers really want to use types, even if the compiler simply ignores them, why don’t they just use Go instead? #python#golang
A guy on YouTube switched his Linux distro from Debian to Arch because he said Neovim on Debian is outdated. He'd be better off learning how to install from source and package it himself before switching to another distro. He may end up spending his entire life switching Linux distros rather than actually learning #Linux.
There are many similar(loan) words in Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Cantonese. I can feel the influence of ancient Chinese characters in these languages, which gives a sense of unity within Asia. It’s sad to see Cantonese disappearing and that China is not trying to preserve it.
