IMO, the best thing that SAG-AFTRA members could do would be to fully embrace the labor v. capital narrative & use their social media & other clout to portray themselves as brothers & sisters in arms with all laborers.
This will help temper attacks on them as just a bunch of entitled rich actors who are fortunate enough to even be in a union.
It is the perfect opportunity to get desperately needed media coverage on the importance of the labor movement. I hope they use it.
👀 Very important article by @jdp23 that explains how bad actors (e.g., Libs of TikTok) could easily identify targets (e.g., trans and trans-friendly folks) to harass in the #Fediverse if/and when #Meta decides to federate...
Why just blocking Meta's #Threads won't be enough to protect your privacy once they join the fediverse
This article reminded me that Meta launched Threads not to scoop up disgruntled Twitter users, but to scoop up disgruntled Twitter *advertisers*. Because of course that's all they care about. Duh.
Here's something that I believe is often overlooked in the social media platform debates:
The #Fediverse provides the best opportunity for people who don't already have a huge following on other social media platforms to actually have their voice heard by people who might not hear it elsewhere.
I know the debate surrounding federating with Threads as well as the debate surrounding things like adding quote boosts and search to the Mastodon UX has already been beaten to death, but...
Imagine Libs of TikTok searching for people posting about trans issues on Mastodon and then quote boosting those posts with their usual rage-baiting to get people to dog-pile on folks here on Mastodon.
That's the fear I believe a lot of people have and I 100% think that it is a legitimate fear.
@Gargron@dansup Sorry to chime in uninvited but if you're going to sign an NDA with a company like Meta please please make sure you have an attorney in your neck of the woods review it thoroughly before you sign it. I haven't ever reviewed a Meta NDA but I have reviewed ones from Google, Microsoft, SAP, etc. and even though they are "mutual" they always contain language that benefits them far more than the other party signing (usually a small startup I happen to be advising). 🤓
