It’s very much a Silicon Valley-ism to watch VCs rent a conference room for the weekend to “reinvent transportation” and always always end up inventing a bus. https://mas.to/@assaf/114512547253644084

    Zero gangsters were deported. Zero.

The gang they were supposed to be from was “effectively eradicated in 2023” (source: Venezuelan interior minister).

Which means 238 males were deported without due process to a torture gulag because they were brown.

We all know they’re liars. It’s important to understand the human cost of those lies. #USPol

Your regular reminder that Deloitte has a near-monopoly on for-profit building of state-level public benefits web software.

As a result, these builds cost US states hundreds of millions of dollars and are actively terrible. https://mastodon.social/@arstechnica/113663998206658345

What’s even better? Get rid of street parking!

Ground-floor storefront retail is really Pedestrian Retail, which depends on pedestrian traffic volume (not parking) for revenue.

The best way to increase pedestrian traffic is to use the space in front of stores for pro-pedestrian activities like “walking” or “sitting and having a coffee”.

I recommend reading “The High Cost of Free Parking” by professor Donald Shoup of UCLA. https://youtu.be/Akm7ik-H_7U?si=ySNo85pqcit_Q2zL https://kolektiva.social/@other_ghosts/113523017409701064

My modest contribution toward solving Oakland's budget problems: Instead of investing in parking enforcement, just drop the price of metered parking to $1 an hour. This is not Beverly Hills. Oakland parking prices are absurd, and they are part of the reason nobody pays the meter. Gambling on a ticket makes a lot more sense at $3 an hour. They also disincentivize patronizing local businesses—allegedly a major concern of the recall crowd. You can even market the change as a sort of "We're all in this together, so let's all chip in" sort of campaign. There are alternatives to doubling down on repression at every opportunity. #Oakland #Parking

If you build separated Mobility Lanes, people will use them. There is a ton of unmet non-car transportation demand.

The logic is backwards, “no one bikes so why build lanes?” People don’t bike when it’s unsafe to do so. If you build it, they will ride.

I’m on an extremely clean, affordable, fast, and timely monorail train to the airport in Naha, Okinawa. It even has these gated walls to prevent injury.

Sometimes when I see what is possible elsewhere, I can’t believe the state of US transit.

This morning, I was leaving a coffee shop on my cargo e-bike and about five #Oakland firefighters stopped me to ask questions.

    “How much does it cost?”
“Can you take kids *and* groceries on it?”
“How often do you charge it and how far does it go?”
“Can we sit on it and take pictures?” (they did)

Sometimes I realize I’m more than just a cyclist - I’m an accidental advocate by moving around in a different way than most people.
