One of the best pieces of open source software that I use all the time is Syncthing.
It just works. It is so good.

My main use case is that I have an old PC that I use to connect to a 1990s film scanner. I got tired of using all kinds of portable hard drives to move stuff from one computer to another.
I have a NAS set up at home and I just do Syncthing on the NAS and the PC so it's always uploaded with the latest scans.
Later I pull the files I want into my Mac to do more work on the digital negatives.
there's probably a world i get ssd drives on my NAS and write / work out of them directly, but today is not the day
@essentiallyjay i'm fine with storage of files in this way, but in terms of working actively off a nas for digital and video, i might go with asustor flashtor. those other options are fine for storage / media servers (which i already run elsewhere).
@skinnylatte Might be worth looking into a diy nas on truenas scale or unraid.
@skinnylatte Just curious—what scanner? I still have an Epson V300 I haven’t used since my early film photography days scanning negatives and slides.
@genxjamerican I have a Plustek 8200i and a Nikon CoolScan 8000ED
@skinnylatte yeah! I use it to automatically put my photos on my NAS.
A bit bummed that the package for the NAS isn't getting any further updates, and that they just announced they aren't doing Android support any more, though 😞
@Hyperlynx oh! My asustor has a built in docker system so it does update
@adarsh I use Asustor. I like the specs, cheaper than Synology, and some pretty interesting software out of the box. It’s a busybox system so you can ssh in, and you can install stuff through containers. Since I was familiar with that, I felt like I could quickly use it. I didn’t want to use a more closed system
@skinnylatte Which NAS, out of curiosity? Choosing one is confusing for me.
