What’s even better? Get rid of street parking!

Ground-floor storefront retail is really Pedestrian Retail, which depends on pedestrian traffic volume (not parking) for revenue.

The best way to increase pedestrian traffic is to use the space in front of stores for pro-pedestrian activities like “walking” or “sitting and having a coffee”.

I recommend reading “The High Cost of Free Parking” by professor Donald Shoup of UCLA. https://youtu.be/Akm7ik-H_7U?si=ySNo85pqcit_Q2zL https://kolektiva.social/@other_ghosts/113523017409701064

My modest contribution toward solving Oakland's budget problems: Instead of investing in parking enforcement, just drop the price of metered parking to $1 an hour. This is not Beverly Hills. Oakland parking prices are absurd, and they are part of the reason nobody pays the meter. Gambling on a ticket makes a lot more sense at $3 an hour. They also disincentivize patronizing local businesses—allegedly a major concern of the recall crowd. You can even market the change as a sort of "We're all in this together, so let's all chip in" sort of campaign. There are alternatives to doubling down on repression at every opportunity. #Oakland #Parking
