@iameli@iame.li@chetwisniewski@securitycafe.ca At a certain point, trade-offs must be made. If a monopoly persists in the name of security, work at making federation more secure. Either way, security is no excuse for abuse—especially considering that this is Meta-owned WhatsApp we’re talking about.
I talk about the history of web browsers. And who shows up? @lisamelton@mastodon.social, the person who started the Safari and WebKit projects at Apple.
So I ask her a question. And who does she refer me to? The person who led the Internet Explorer 5 team at Microsoft.
The sandbox environment has now been launched, which means you can set up your own AT protocol-enabled server.
It's possible that Bluesky will finally start federating by the end of summer. However, knowing how most dev teams work, this launch is not a certainty. It always takes time to iron out bugs.
How successful do you think Bluesky's federation will be? And how will it impact the current userbase using Bluesky?
@Cthululemon Actually, @kainoa isn't doing any of the day-to-day admin work, and he's probably very happy about that. I'll be the one doing the daily operations with a little help from #SpaceHost.
@gme@bofh.social@kainoa@calckey.social Since Meta hasn't created a federated server yet, this block is more a statement of intent than anything. But knowing Meta, it is highly likely that they will use one domain. In the event someone reports a Meta-run domain that is not blocked, we will investigate. If confirmed to be run by Meta, we will block.
@HannahCelsius@sunny.garden Sorry, I liked the response but didn’t feel I had anything further thoughtful worth adding to make the conversation better. However, I gave you a star to show I appreciated it.
It’s bloody annoying when someone asks about your interests so you tell them about your interests but they’re only feigning interest for whatever reason that’s unexplained and I have to wonder why they started the conversation in the first place.
For the past month, someone sent me DMs asking me about my cassette collection. Of course I answered back because no one asks about my cassette collection.
Then they asked to meet up for coffee. And I asked if it was to talk about cassettes or trade them, and they said “No”.
I asked why they wanted to meet, and they wouldn’t answer. So I said, no, I don’t want to meet.
Then they asked why I was wasting their time, and I said, “I didn’t think this was a waste of time, I thought you liked cassettes.”
@thirzah@mastodon.social Yes, I think we're agreeing. Sometimes women are put in the room to create optics for equal representation when, in fact, there is none.
@jens@toots.nu But visibility about the link often sucks. And because people don't read things in detail, you have to use highlights. Just telling you my experience.
@thirzah@mastodon.social I've seen organizations where women were put on the board for representation, but their perspectives were not asked. And on the rare instance their perspectives were asked, nothing actionable was done.
And more than once, I've seen women on the board essentially sidelined from the decision-making process while the old boys club made the actual decisions.
