@luckytran @inthehands This basically happened to me, in the 90's. Obviously not COVID, but it was sequela to some kind of infection. During junior high I got sick with some week-or-two long something (moderate fever, no energy. maybe a flu, maybe something else), and for a number of years afterwards I had chronic fatigue syndrome and stomach problems. It took me 6 years to get through high school because of it, but, very fortunately, eventually it cleared up, and I've had normal health since.

@luckytran @inthehands After a few years I'd gotten a diagnosis for both the chronic fatigue syndrome and the hard-to-pin-down and the cause-or-mechanism-never-really-understood stomach problems ("pseudo obstructional disorder") and that made things a lot lot smoother with the school administration. Before that "you're making it up to stay home" or "it's all in your head" was the unspoken response.

@inthehands and they might not torment all of humanity as responsibly as we are so arguably we have a moral obligation to do this

@inthehands Barfing while your tongue is stuck in an electric socket seems unsafe. And yet, I can not find any reports of a single person ever getting injured that way!

I’m in an airport and this restaurant advertises itself as “authentic street cuisine” and as far as I can tell that means absolutely nothing and their menu is just completely standard pub food. Burgers, pizza, Cobb salad, etc. It took me some amount of restraint to not hassle the waitstaff about this and ask dumb questions like how authentic are the mozzarella sticks.

@inthehands well I will say that it’s pretty easy for them to do rigorous a/b testing here so I bet even if it doesn’t work well on you it probably is actually paying off at least in the short term. Long term I think that helped set brick and mortar stores up to be replaced by Amazon.

@inthehands it’s the same reason department stores are hard to navigate. Your goal entering may be to purchase / watch a particular item, but their goal is to show you as much of the other stuff they have on offer as possible. So when you’re done watching the thing you wanted to watch you think “ok but I’ve also been meaning to check out this other thing”

@inthehands Just keeping the lights on so long takes so much adaptability, as staff changes, as the economy changes, as the clientele changes, as neighborhoods change. Yelp didn't even exist when they started!

Searching the web, I can find a ton of hits for “history’s greatest monster”, quite a few for “history’s worst monster” but nothing for “history’s median monster”

@inthehands We get a lot of “let me write an article for your website" spam too. It's hard for me to imagine who could ever possibly want that.

@sidereal @paul_ipv6 @inthehands @ajsadauskas maybe this is a good use case for an LLM; have it write back to them and waste their time (to change the economics of this spammy approach) without wasting my own time.
