Epilogue: the #Amiga 3000 is back in one piece, fully restored including the battclock (Amiga parlance for RTC).

After #retrobrighting and some cleaning, the case looks new. Actually, one of the 4 external screws is now missing, d'oh!

After some testing, the Workbench partition became corrupt: the Tools directory was still shown in dir output, but you couldn't read its contents. A DiskSalv 4 didn't find any issues.

Timothy De Groote new director of Hyperion Entertainment:

I heard at AmiWest that development of #AmigaOS 3.3 is quietly continuing, but it's unlikely that new releases will happen while there's legal uncertainty on the fate of Hyperion.

@trebroNdotnet I asked on the Acill Classics discord, and they confirmed that the longer hex screws go on the VGA connector and the two stacked connectors... for no apparent reason.

@globalc SuSE was probably the first Linux distro I used on a PC.

Previously I had used Linux m68k on the Amiga, and even redistributed it as a 3-CD set.

I carefully stored all the screws and other loose parts, but I didn't track where each type came from.

There are 6 longer hex spacers and 6 shorter ones. Which connectors get the longer type... and why?

@wyatt8740 Wow, Turbosilver. Wasn't it the predecessor of Imagine? You might want to scan your manual and upload it to the Internet Archive, unless it's already available.

Another early ray-tracer was Sculpt 3D, which was used to render the famous Juggler animation:

      Sculpt 3D
Sculpt 3D is a raytrace application released in 1987 for Amiga computers programmed by Eric Graham. Sculpt 3D was one of the first ray tracing applications released for the Amiga computers. It proved that raytracing could be done on home computers as well as on mainframes. Years later, the company Byte by Byte released a port for the Apple Macintosh. The Amiga Juggler The first demo that showed the raytracing capabilities was an animation of a juggler juggling three chrome balls. Even though the juggler was constructed out of spheres, the balls' reflections and movement made it look realistic. The juggler demo was generated on an experimental version of Sculpt 3D. The animation, released in January 1986, generated so much interest that the full 3D application was programmed. Sculpt 4D Sculpt 3D created still images, and a tool compiled an animation from these still images. Sculpt 4D (Sculpt-Animate 4D) added animation capabilities to Sculpt 3D. It allowed movement of objects by setting keyframes. See also TurboSilver Imagine...

The #Amiga 3000 front panel came out after 48h in the #retrobrighting pool. The result is uniform and the shade matches the original shade.

As for the PC keyboard, the plastic didn't become brittle or get damaged in any visible way.

Sadly, the #Commodore logo on the front visibly faded 😢

Is there a way to prevent this?

I can start reassembling the A3000 chassis...

To be honest, #Commodore designed a terrible drive bay for the #Amiga 3000.

It's so bad that someone felt the need to design a new split frame with much improved ergonomics:
    https://www.amibay.com/threads/amiga-3000-drive-bay-frame-split.2444489/

I should probably get in line to obtain one of these when the next batch of production happens.

Ugh. Cutting square holes with a hack saw isn't as easy as it seems 😰

I guess that's the original meaning of the term "hacking":

I could just cut an opening right over the RJ45 connector. So I took some measurements and marked the area to cut off in orange.

Luckily, there is already a hole in the frame from which I can start cutting around with a hack saw.

How hard could it possibly be?

To complete my #Amiga 3000 restoration, I still need to solve a small mechanical issue: there is barely enough clearance under the drive bay for a Z3660 with a Z-Turn board on top.

My Z3660 card is also slightly tilted upwards when plugged into the CPU slot, and the RJ45 connector of the Z-Turn contacrs the bottom of the frame, putting stress on the connector.
