@JustinPot absolutely can relate to that! This was one of the worst things about the annual performance review... "leadership attributes". I did not want a leadership or management position. I "just" wanted to do fun science and engineering. My director was shocked when he offered me a management position and I declined before he had finished the sentence.

@JustinPot at 3M there was the concept of "dual ladders", meaning for each management level there was an equivalent scientist/engineer level. You could rise through either ladder. Still seemed there were many more managers than scientists on each level

Update: the German army now sent two tanks to the wildfire area to create safe fire break lines in the WWII ammunition contaminated area!! Bizarre times...

So in my home state in Germany there is a forest on fire, the largest wildfire in the history of North Rhine-Westfalia.
Size wise nothing compared to what we see here in the US, but there is a little quirk: firefighters have to be extra cautious and can't access all areas, because of WWII ammunition, mines and grenades that still are in the soil.
I remember hiking that general area with my parents in the 1980s and occasionally finding rifle rounds.
Wars have long lasting consequences.

That is not saying that he is alive... One could state that if he is brain dead and the plan is to keep the body going until August 4, or whatever the special election deadline is.... The whole situation is just bizarre.

@Infoseepage in Cologne they reported that last Sunday 120 people died, while they normally would have expected about 30 deaths. This made the news Tuesday, but then quickly vanished. Seems nobody is that interested in digging deeper and following up on what that means for all of Germany or Europe. Because as you state, the buildings are still standing.
