@clacke Weird! Mind you, we get so used to our home surroundings. A few years ago I was astounded to learn that there are places in the world where there are not litter fees on things like pop bottles or beer cans - any beverage container. Such refundable deposits have been in force where I live for over 50 years by now.
@billyjoebowers I have an 80GB kiwix archive from 2 years ago, plus a few smaller ones. I just use wget with a bw limit, so it doesn't bother the rest of the house.
@clacke My province of British Columbia decided to eliminate it, but hasn't enacted the law yet. So stupid. Parts of my province don't do DST - the town of Creston never changes their clocks and, in the north east, Fort Nelson, Dawson Creek and Fort St. John don't use DST either. What a mess. The province of Saskatchewan doesn't use it and the Yukon territory doesn't either. Meanwhile, here on fedi, our friends in europe change back from DST a week earlier than we @lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net
"Scrollbars. Ever heard of them? They’re pretty cool. Click and drag on a scrollbar and you can move content around in a scrollable content pane. I love that shit. Every day I am scrolling on my computer, all day long. But the scrollbars are getting smaller and this is increasingly becoming a problem. I would show you screenshots but they’re so small that even screenshotting them is hard to do. And people keep making them even smaller, hiding them away, its like they don’t want you to scroll!"
HN Comments: way more unhappy people! "It's amazing how much damage these cargo-cult UI/UX morons have done in the past ten years. They threw out several decades of usability pioneered by real HID experts for something that looks pretty but doesn't fucking work for a lot of people."
@atomicpoet Brands are just as free as anyone to have their own instances and maybe they can convince their 'fans' to follow them. I'll bet e.g. apple could do it and find followers easily enough. Lots of fan bois for various things around. And then the brand absolutely controls the channel.
@tootbrute I made my filesytem match my notes system, so I can find stuff.
Joplin has linked notes too, which is nice to link to other things within joplin, but I do two other things too.
file:///Documents/subdir/somefile and the other way 'round as well. I have a file extension I made in kde. I cleverly named it... wait for it... dot joplin! :-) Anyhow, all it does is call a script with: cat $1 | xargs -I % xdg-open % Which pulls up joplin with the right note. Right-clicks on joplin notes put the note id in your clipboard, so it isn't onerous to make little files like that for convenience.
I'm using the dickens out of duolingo, since I gave up on trying to learn to read other languages by fedi-absorption :-) Just reading the news and spanish-writing fedizens was only kinda working. I have two email accounts for spanish - one is 2 weeks behind the other. I do the new/harder one before work in the morning and the easier/2 wks behind one after work in the afternoon. Last night I added french to the afternoon one and just added german to the morning effort.
