You would have thought that a $3tn. company could (and would) make a stand against the UK Govt. to protect its customers. But, I guess not.

    @neil Enforcement?

The reality is that today, if to are the victim of physical criminal damage, your shop suffers theft etc. you are unlikely to even receive a visit from the Police due to all the funding and budget cuts.

Isn't it obvious that Ofcom is going to require the budget of a small nation state to deliver on all the expectations of all our politicians?

I wish Westminster held these US Social Media corporations to account in the same way.

Yet each and every UK govt. department, council and institution embrace and utilise their services to disseminate information.

This compels the UK populus to register personal details with them to access this information. This is despite their weak data protections and inadequate content moderation.

Generating immense revenue from surveillance advertising, profits are spirited out of UK jurisdiction thereby avoiding tax which degrades our health system, roads, education and other essential services.

These profits further enrich thier right-wing billionaire owners and fund global broadcast of their own world view. An abuse of power that has demonstratably destabilised countries who do not align or agree with them.

Why is it just Brazil that has the cojones to do this and take them on?

    tbh I think a location geo-fence wouldn't be a bad thing.

    But happy new year anyway!

Democracy isn't broken. This is how it works. It means that prior politicians and political parties, who all enjoyed power, have done a lousy job of addressing the needs of the people they supposedly represent. We all need to reflect on this.

A little known fact that Queen Elizabeth II sent this message, unsolicited, to all ARPANET users way back in 1976.

@siege Well, the public sector are requiring citizens to register in order to receive updates. If that no longer happened X's subscriber base would be greatly reduced, thereby reducing advertising revenue it receives. Besides, I'm not sure any country has a law that could simply cut the head off a lawful commercial company.

@siege I don't think banning X is the answer. Getting the establishment (public sector bodies etc.) to stop publishing public information via proprietary platforms would go a very long way to sorting the problem out imho.

People are going bonkers over Trump's immunity from prosecution. But we, in the UK, set the precedent.

"Charles is exempt from criminal and civil proceedings as the head of state. But the King’s immunity extends beyond his public duties to his conduct on privately-owned assets, estates, and businesses."

Jury finds three Just Stop Oil petrol pump protestors not guilty despite all their legal defences being ruled out. A unanimous Not Guilty verdict was returned.

They were charged with £190,000 of damage and loss of earnings for decommissioning petrol pumps in April 2022.

    Some say this is astonishing.

It's not really. It is called jury equity.

Any jury may consider that the law itself is unjust. It is an important principle and indicates public opposition to aspects of law, in this case, the 'lawful' behaviour of fossil fuel corporations.

Jury finds Just Stop Oil supporters not guilty in petrol pump case
      from JSO Press

[1] During the trial, Judge Sellers ruled that none of the defence’s three arguments would be allowed for the jury to

Revolut does not have a UK banking licence.

If you are a victim of fraud you'll be SOL.

Best advice; close your account and move conventional bank elsewhere.

Please boost to make people in the UK aware.

@fabio Maybe somebody like @evanprodromou has a take on this? I'm certain that better education (simple to digest infographics) would go a long way quell the hysteria. The reality is that this is not just a convo specific to Threads, it's about interoperability more generally isn't it?

Rather than seeing the UK crawling back to the EU, I'd prefer the citizens of each nation choose to do so independently. The UK is an inequitable and archaic union that's had its day, just like empire before it. This seems like a much more positive vision!

@goatsarah I stopped selling to EU because of the additional paperwork so I'm out of the loop. I'm guessing that you can't just pay the UK VAT at 20% which maybe better than the standard Portugal rate of 23%(?). I can understand Portugal wanting to charge VAT on import if purchased VAT free somewhere, but I'm a bit perplexed why they are able to charge for it again... Double tax.... Or maybe you're referring to import duty....

@evan I pondered this when you first posted. It's great you using your position to kick off the fundraiser. Maybe some of that funding could be used to develop resources to deliver more diversity and better moderation skills across all instances? A subtly different approach targeting people and developing their interpersonal skills rather than infrastructure......
