@goatsarah I don't think Ancient Hebrew or Aramaic had the subjunctive.

Which is kinda interesting if I'm right given the Gospels are Koine Greek (which had it, I think) accounts of things said probably in Aramaic. I'd ask a couple of friends who would know, but I've had two hours sleep and I'm up early to fly down your general direction tomorrow for a few days away from Terf Island (yay) and I'm not starting a theology debate right now :)

@goatsarah @madelainetaylor @wihtlore I'm pondering Japanese now, for... reasons. Basically spelling is either perfectly phonetic (hiragana, katakana) or ideographic so the question makes no sense so I don't know why I'm pondering it at all!

I always thought the hardest thing about learning English would be its excessive reliance on idiom.

Today in trans, the UK government is trailing that they're going to make it legal for schools to refuse to treat trans kids according to their genders, and instead allow them to be treated according to their genitals.

I'm convinced we've lost, and should be putting our efforts into mitigation so in that vein...

UK trans folk without passports, can I ask why you don't have one? Is it financial or legal barriers? I know one, possibly two in meatspace without a passport and one of them is because they're in transition limbo.

I miss the golden age of home computing. That was a couple of years in the early 80s for you young'uns when stuff became affordable and everybody and their dog had a games machine and more crucially, tried to code on it.

Writing games in BASIC and assembler to get printed in national magazines for twenty five quid a throw and having your geeky mates at school go WTF when they read the programmer's name. Reaching Elite on the tape version and then losing the badge at school (sob). The joy of acquiring a 5.25" floppy drive, and never having to wind back a tape that decided to unspool itself in the player again.

Now home computing means incessant bullshit arguments with fascists, and coding means yawny stuff to pay the bills, and games are made by vast capitalist empires.

Pass me a can of Jolt cola, I wanna go back to making levels games that run in 3K RAM and hand-assembling 6502 into DATA statements.

@RenewedRebecca @goatsarah Both acetaminophen and paracetamol are shortened versions of the stock names. They were both brand names about 60-70 years ago.

Paracetamol is the international word for it though. I suspect that a lot of people outside the US wouldn't have a clue what acetaminophen was without looking it up.

Musing on the idea of apologising for something you haven't done. Someone I'm no longer in touch with who I really respect, used to argue that we should apologise in such circumstances in order to create peace. We should be the ones who back down from our own sense of justice to create harmony. Or something. She was badass in debate though, she'd rip arguments to shreds. And then apologise if she hurt fash feelings.

She was and is an Orthodox Christian, and she got kicked out of her church for saying trans rights.

I'm currently being asked to apologise for telling a sort-of family member who started peddling transphobic lies, to get in the sea and never speak to me again. It would create a bit of harmony if I did.

I don't think I will. This isn't about pride. It's about justice - the real kind not retribution, the making of a better world.

Went back on FB after a week or so away. Immediately a "trans ally" I know argued with me that trans women have been proved to have an unfair performance advantage in sport and should be banned.

Stuff like this has happened to me so often that I don't trust any cis folk any more.

The ones I pretend to trust, I just expect to turn at any moment.

It's sad but it's happened so many times that it's better for my mental health if I assume in advance they're all one step away from being radicalised.
