(2 of 2) In 2022 I let go of creating the perfect productivity system, and embraced the buffet, patchwork approach. Franken-tivity?

One concern I have with @buttondown is with it being run by one person. One trustworthy person from all that I can see, but one person nonetheless. Justin, can you confirm that there's something and someone(s) in place should you be unable to continue running the service?

@liztai @justin I feel very appreciative to finally have enough paid subscribers to cover that fee. TBH my attitude to Substack is similar to yours. I’m leaving more for long term stability and independence’s sake than any moral stance.

@liztai @justin Along with everything you’ve mentioned, they’re just another closed shop. I don’t need any more of those, Medium fills my quota!

I’ve started the ball rolling to make the shift to Buttondown. It’s going well so far.

@liztai Yep, it’s kind of flimsy, and will be in the recycling bin on Tuesday night. There are 12 priests, one per month, with the dates of each month on two lines, added as an afterthought at the bottom of the page.

Be warned: they have committed productivity sacrilege by making this calendar useless for planning or recording anything. Each month consists of an almost full page picture of a priest with a few numbers at the bottom, white type on a black background.

The mind boggles at the thought process behind creating a calendar of good-looking, celibate men. (I've looked at the inside text; it's not a joke product)

Mother-in-law was gifted this hot Catholic priests calendar, purchased in Italy as a joke to make her ecumenical eyes roll.

Well roll they did, so I am offering it free to anyone who wants it, for the price of postage!
If you live near Gosford NSW you can come and pick it up.

Either that or we’ll set it aside in the kindling box ready for winter.

@liztai @scott The highest we've had is 46˚C, and I'm always stunned to see people (some of whom I gave birth to) flocking to the beach to fry themselves silly in that sort of heat.

Hibernation is more my style during extremes of weather.

This reminds me of a quote from Sense and Sensibility:

“If you cannot think of anything appropriate to say, you will please restrict your remarks to the weather.”

    Nice, safe territory, this 😇

@liztai Yeah, we're a bit soft. We lived for years without an aircon, and I really don't know how we did it *and* were able to work from home!

26˚C is comfortable over night for me, I even turned the fan off because I was cold. 28˚C while moving around during the day, with humidity, not fun.

It's surprising what you can get used to, but I don't think I'll be moving to Malaysia any time soon! That's just a bit too close to the Equator for comfort.

@scott @liztai Yes, indeed. We used to lay towels on the bed, get into swimming costumes, and douse ourselves in a cold shower before lying down. Fans help, but these days my sinuses don't like them.

I'm only an hour or so north of Sydney, so it's really not *that* humid here. Can't imagine what it's like in Darwin, or (gestures) all the countries up there.

Context: I grew up in Adelaide, where the word 'humidity' strikes fear into the hearts of even the bravest of souls!

I held off putting on the air conditioner for as long as I could (such a privileged position to be in, I’m well aware), 28 C inside the house is my upper limit before the brain starts scrambling thoughts into one big go-nowhere stew.

@apolaine @buttondown I believe people are already doing this as a workaround. I’d prefer to set my own slugs, but redirects are better than nothing.

@liztai It's really hard to beat as a tool you don't have to pay for up front. (It's going to be a lot of work for me to move, no idea how long it will take.) I hope it keeps working out for you.

@liztai I'm not sure what to think about this. Uh, well done? But a bit too late. They had time to investigate fully before making that public statement.

I could so easily stay with Substack, especially now that they've wiped their nose, but as you've expressed in the past it's just a bit icky. Their Notes would have been a killer feature (maybe) if it had been ActivityPub compatible, and not just closed shop.

    Don't fence me in, peeps.

Has anyone used Brizy Cloud for #blogging?

I bought a lifetime deal to a hosted Brizy Cloud site a few years ago, and am wondering if it would be worth the trouble of moving everything across.

Other than that, thus far Micro.blog and Buttondown look like my best options. I'm leaning toward Buttondown because of the integrated optional payments, which would give those who are willing the opportunity to help me pay for the subscription fee.
