I held off putting on the air conditioner for as long as I could (such a privileged position to be in, I’m well aware), 28 C inside the house is my upper limit before the brain starts scrambling thoughts into one big go-nowhere stew.

Compared to Malaysia though, the humidity is nothing, but the heat in Malaysia is far more temperate and you can get by.

Ellane W (ellane@pkm.social)'s status on Thursday, 11-Jan-2024 14:02:59 JST Ellane W @scott @liztai Yes, indeed. We used to lay towels on the bed, get into swimming costumes, and douse ourselves in a cold shower before lying down. Fans help, but these days my sinuses don't like them.
I'm only an hour or so north of Sydney, so it's really not *that* humid here. Can't imagine what it's like in Darwin, or (gestures) all the countries up there.
Context: I grew up in Adelaide, where the word 'humidity' strikes fear into the hearts of even the bravest of souls!

Ellane W (ellane@pkm.social)'s status on Thursday, 11-Jan-2024 14:03:11 JST Ellane W @liztai Yeah, we're a bit soft. We lived for years without an aircon, and I really don't know how we did it *and* were able to work from home!
26˚C is comfortable over night for me, I even turned the fan off because I was cold. 28˚C while moving around during the day, with humidity, not fun.
It's surprising what you can get used to, but I don't think I'll be moving to Malaysia any time soon! That's just a bit too close to the Equator for comfort.

I never really how awful summers are until I experienced it, and honestly Malaysian weather doesn't feel as bad. But then again, I'm Malaysian, so ... @ellane

Scott Killen 🇺🇸 (scott@ttocs.io)'s status on Thursday, 11-Jan-2024 14:43:31 JST Scott Killen 🇺🇸 @ellane @liztai I am near Charleston, SC, USA, and it gets very humid. I remember visiting Phoenix, AZ once when the temps were 110F, but the low humidity made them bearable. (Except you need to use an oven mitt to open the car door. 😜)
I have always heard that Malaysia is a beautiful place. Maybe someday my wife and I can take a trip...

LOL you and me both! I once had to endure a 46˚C summer period in Adelaide too. All I could do was NOT MOVE, because moving meant more heat being generated by my body lol. Like I said, I don't know how you guys do it hahah. My house wasn't air conditioned - it only had one of those water evaporator things which was really useless... -

Ellane W (ellane@pkm.social)'s status on Thursday, 11-Jan-2024 15:12:58 JST Ellane W @liztai @scott The highest we've had is 46˚C, and I'm always stunned to see people (some of whom I gave birth to) flocking to the beach to fry themselves silly in that sort of heat.
Hibernation is more my style during extremes of weather.
This reminds me of a quote from Sense and Sensibility:
“If you cannot think of anything appropriate to say, you will please restrict your remarks to the weather.”
Nice, safe territory, this 😇
