As we remember #ShafiqahHudson and the fact that her death hinged on marginalization and the disparate treatment she received at the hands of the healthcare industry as a Black woman, it is also important that we name what killed her.
She is dead because she caught COVID.
The havoc that COVID wreaked on her body was fatal. It took years, and it was complicated by other things, but ultimately she would still be with us without that virus.
Think of her and put a mask on your face in public.
I was added to a group text this morning, with several cousins. Amadi, said they, you planned our family reunions before and it’s been more than 10 years, we think we should have another next summer. You have all the stuff from planning those first three, will you take the lead since you don’t work?
I had to sit with that for a while.
“Do you remember WHY I don’t work?”
Sure, your disabled, chronically fatigued, immune compromised cousin will plan an event she can’t safely attend. Why not?🙄
Because the abled world decided that COVID was over for them, COVID will seemingly never be over for some of us. All of the abled people who continue to whine about having to stay at home in 2020 (it was never lockdown, and I will never call it that) and how horrible it was to go without social interaction have pretty much ensured that some of us will never be able to socialize with anyone except through screens.
Hospitals are reinstating mask mandates and they’re still not getting it.
COVID is still real. There’s nothing indicating that next summer will suddenly be safe when it comes to this virus. I would love to see my extended family. Since the last time we’ve all been together, my mother has become the local family matriarch, of sorts. She’s the eldest in any case and would love to be able to see everybody, and there are children that none of us have met, but there’s no way to do this kind of thing safely, with people coming in from across the country.
Money can’t restore what Rudy #Giuliani took from Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman. The trauma they’ve gone through and the ongoing loss of safety and security in their own homes and even their own names cannot really be compensated for.
But $148 million can sure provide a lot of creature comfort to make it a bit less awful!
To entice people to sign up for Threads, Meta has been putting little snippets of posts into people’s Instagram feeds. For the first couple of weeks you could expand and see whole posts and reply threads, now they are truncating the posts, and when you try to read the whole thing you are just prompted to download the Threads app.
Congratulations on ensuring that people who dislike underhandedness never use your new platform, Zuck!
@pixplz @ryanhoulihan I mean that every health agency around the planet has decided that this is no longer a priority, and it is extraordinarily unlikely that the US government is going to reverse course on that when they’d be standing alone. It’s not a good thing, but it’s the thing.
@pixplz @ryanhoulihan there is going to be a primary, several people are running, they just can’t win. But you can’t make people run.
We’re not going to get government action on Covid again. The whole world is done with it.
We have a formal alliance with Israel, which means our response has to strike a very fine balance that is unlikely to please the left, but is weighed to avoid regional war, if not worse. There are no good answers that are fast.
@ryanhoulihan I think it’s important that if we’re going to talk publicly about these things that we have something more to say than just everything is bad, as well as an understanding of who should be held accountable for what, at a minimum.
@ryanhoulihan so what’s the answer? What’s the better option?
What does anti-trans bias in media look like?
It looks like an article about complaints over the mere existence of a transgender character in a TV show that came from less than 0.0001895% of the show’s viewers, needlessly amplifying the bigotry of an infinitesimal number of complainers and granting them unwarranted attention.
Worsened by a headline that treats the number of complaints as significant and worded as though they hold some validity.
I’m devastated and sick that people in the #disability space on visual social media platforms with 1M+ follower counts have chosen to add to the deluge of misinformation teeming right now, by lying about the outcomes of the #SSISavingsPenaltyEliminationAct , which is currently churning through Congress, passes.
Creating false hope in disabled people who are living in poverty, promising substantive life changes that aren’t coming is just beyond cruelty and comprehension. I don’t get it.
@inthehands We've only had them recently, and they haven't even been rolled out to the whole city yet. We had a one bag system, where all recyclables could be put into any blue colored bag, and our grocery stores all used blue plastic bags for that reason. Now we have a plastic bag ban, and recycling bins that are a hassle to move to and from the curb, the most common plastics aren't permitted and the plastic that is allowed still probably ends up in a landfill anyway.
My sweet friend Corvin is facing cancer treatment, and as an American who isn't independently wealthy of course there's a GoFundMe. If you're still looking for #giving and #MutualAid opportunities, a hard-working adjunct professor in Iowa whose uterus went full freakout mode isn't a bad place to go. https://www.gofundme.com/f/30vse7dt3c?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer
@GreenSkyOverMe it's an awkward size and shape, and just heavy enough when empty -- let alone when full -- that it would benefit from having wheels which it doesn't have. It's basically the cheapest refuse bin one can buy in a hardware store, but blue, with the city's logo and some info about recycling printed on it.
One thing that I was unprepared for as an adult was how much hassle the municipal recycling bin would become.
A quick reminder that if you are responsible for decorating outdoor areas during this festive time of the year, please do not use decorations that make handrails less usable. I know the string of lights or tinsel wrapped around the railing looks fantastic, but people who rely on that railing to safely use the stairs come first.
Today in “this was first reported two decades ago, could’ve been easily confirmed well before that by looking at the data from anywhere at any time, but will apparently need to be reproved again, and again, and again, and again, and again before it matters to anybody” news.

All of the plastic waste in the world outweighs all of the animals in the world by a factor of two.
This plagues me every time I go shopping. I can’t meaningfully reduce my plastic waste without using more gasoline to get products in multiple places to avoid plastic wrapped produce in one place and plastic jars instead of glass or cans in another. That’s no solution.
But this is largely not a problem that consumers can solve, and one that industry won’t. So what next?
