    @bri_seven
I'm also bummed that search engines no longer help you find the most popular reliable or semi reliable website for a topic.

This used to be best within niches but now I really need a hunan to recommend niche sites because I no longer consider search engines reliable. They're something to be navigated but not trusted.

Though that's also on all the folks who gamed search engines to boost their traffic. It isn't only the companies.

@skinnylatte I'm glad you exist and that you've made choices that enrich your sense of who you are despite the precarity and sacrifices.

I love seeing you talk about the various nuances of your experiences. Often it can be difficult for people to share both the bad and the good of making choices that you're happy with while also recognizing that happiness is complicated.

@gerrymcgovern @HistoPol I mean, anyone framing this as a situation to be won isn't actually able to make a coherent argument.

A machine is a tool. If your fridge started demanding that you sacrifice children in order to get ice cubes you would unplug it or get your head checked.

And, this is essentially tech bros asking for human sacrifices on a silicon altar. The priesthood is clearly too high on something and deeply unwell.

No one actually wins this scenario.

@ATLeagle @ai6yr This was always the real purpose of centering technology as "intelligent". It was more about the ability to outsource responsibility for malicious actions.

After all, "don't look at the man behind the curtain", it becomes easier to have a council of tech bros with an AI King that only they know how to run and that they can easily adjust or unplug.

It is deeply stupid but par for the course for people used to outsourcing blame while grabbing power.

@skinnylatte This thread is so on point.

It's been weird because I lived in California for most of my life but with portions of that in the mountains, the valley and the coast so it was a broad experience of the state. Although each area is different it did feel connected.

Then I lived in Florida for a time and now in NC. It feels like Americans don't think about the world because we often barely grasp the rest of our country.

It's all very similar, connected via media culture, and yet...

@skinnylatte there's this idea of: "oh, California is a different culture" or "those people from Vermont are totally different" that I started encountering in Florida but also, once I was in Florida I noticed how often people in California do that about places like Florida and Louisiana.

And, it's not totally wrong on some levels. There are regional differences. But, there's a lot of sameness. It often feels like bickering about if teal is blue or green.

I wanted to mention something that may or may not be US specific.

Culturally, the folks who have different values from this administration have spent lives where those values are casually eroded by a system built to "neg". I think it's important to understand this in order to understand why so many are keeping their heads down.

Because of the decades of vulture capitalists and tying identity to economic power, people have been fighting this whole time...

@JoBlakely @FlashMobOfOne @Mikee The pulling off of the mask for sneezing has struck me as the weirdest example of, "show me you don't know what masking is for".

I was mad all through the early years of the pandemic that there was an utter lack of any educational campaign to teach people proper hygiene habits.

I understand why people don't know about masks. It was never part of my education. I've learned because I enjoy learning. But, most folks don't and no one seemed to want to take that on

@skinnylatte I love when people express this perspective.

I don't have a green thumb but I can cook. I think the time feels like a way of honoring the fact that you're transmuting life into a new life giving form.

It feels like people associate a love of food as hedonistic but I think it's a way to acknowledge all that goes into the ingredients. When it's "just fuel" it feels stark and survivalist.

    Cooking can feel devotional.

@NatureMC @CiaraNi It makes sense that the general public doesn't know.

There's an ad I see sometimes that basically says that AI makes it so you never have to pick two out of three of the: cheaper, faster or better compromise.

As long as marketing departments are the ones reaching out about AI, the average person is likely to believe that somehow it's innovative and because it's being adopted it must be good.

Reaching out to people makes a difference, but it's a slow process.

@NatureMC @CiaraNi I think we're going to have deep knowledge gaps. Which already exist but it feels like a ton of people are willingly giving up their own knowledge and others are willing to gobble up access to real expertise to gatekeep it.

    Which absolutely is dangerous.

I think this is what is not understood by those looking to profit off of gatekeeping knowledge. Making people stupid takes away from their ability to self regulate and creates deeper resentment towards those who keep it.

@susankayequinn I hope we end up with more and more people who strive to do the "boring" things that make life actually function and less folks seeking to take credit for being innovators by creating problems to solve.

Most of life is lived in maintenance modes. We need people who find that exciting. Because, routine can be deeply satisfying as well as being necessary.

@jwildeboer Ads and advertising are (unfortunately) too much of a wedge.

I see it with creative folks who argue that they need to eat. And they're not wrong but it's incredibly nuanced in social spaces.

There's a big risk of losing a sense of any space where you just connect with other people when everything is just reaching into your wallet.

Mutual aid and people sharing their work (which deserves compensation) is different but all money looks the same to people seeking to maximize profit.

@holyramenempire My sense is that a society that accepted and celebrated it's disabled members would necessarily be less 24/7 and growth oriented.

It seems like it would be one that celebrates life, aging and has a healthy relationship with birth/death cycles.

It would have to be a reflective society because it would encourage a certain body awareness that I think is absent in ableist spaces but more present in #disabled ones by necessity.

@holyramenempire It feels like it would be a society that would make more third spaces where disabled people could spend time and feel safe to do so.

Being able to see and be seen would have a greater effect with a slower mindset that allows people to linger and see beyond the disability (which would be, I think different in this context) to see the person and recognize them within the place they inhabit (whatever passions, interests, etc that are also them).

@danstowell @andthisismrspeacock I would suspect it's partly because there are a lot of anti-capitalism voices who are active here.

I wouldn't suggest that we're creating any mass movements but a lot of the folks who don't like what Meta or Twitter are exist in this space and it is large enough that it *could* create momentum on a variety of issues because those issues don't typically disappear via an algorithm like they do in other spaces.

@danstowell @andthisismrspeacock This is usually where I see the most interesting and compelling discussions on a variety of issues backed with links and wonderful deep dives.

It's a lot like what I experienced on forums before Facebook and Twitter vacuumed up a lot of those folks.

I don't think size is the threat here as much as it is a place where a different mode of communicating via social media is being allowed to flourish.

    FB loves social engineering.

@HauntedOwlbear I did pick up on that but I also think it's fueling people's desire for AI art.

Recently read a Nick Cave thing where he talked about how he went to art school and never considered himself to be a musician. It was so absurdly funny and hit at a familiar truth.

I think we often find our talents to be different than our desires. But still we become what we work at.

So many video games have "weird" art but that really allows the other proficiencies to shine through...

@HauntedOwlbear @adventurex @gamingonlinux I always find the idea that someone "can't art" to be a failure of our educational and social systems.

There are so many ways to art. The biggest thing that makes art is time and a willingness not to give up. Even visually unappealing stuff finds an audience when there's enough passion & truth behind it.

Massive success is iffy sure but AI art won't fix that. If everything can look phenomenal then something else will be the reason for success.
