@dcc
For example kdenlive would just crash during renders. I was using the binaries in the repos, not compiling the ports.

I would say FreeBSD, but when I tried it so many of the ports were buggy and or broken. It's not for creative work. Linux barely does it and thankfully something like Ubuntu-Studio exists because I don't have the patience for trial and error configuring.

Sadly no, using OpenBSD would set me back. I did my time in the trenches.

I still have my Windows install in case this experiment fails, it's on a separate drive and I get a comfy grub menu to choose when I boot up.

I'm glad you guys talked me into this, this is cool. If only I can get Serum working thats the one that I'm skeptical about because I just have such bad luck with wine.

I installed the low latency kernel and the AUDIO IS FUCKING MENTAL!!!! Just as good as ASIO. I can't wait to see how your DAC sounds.

This is a big deal. This makes Mixxx essentially better than Serato which requires $9.99 month subscription to basically do the same shit. Eat a fat fucking dick Serato!! 🖕

Im going to do a full Linux audio setup with this drive, no ardour, we are using Reaper and OpenMPT. Hopefully fingers crossed I can get yabridge and the splice app working properly so I can use Serum. Instructions say I need wine staging.

I'm not batting for Windows I'm pointing out the fact that the main Linux distros were on a path to be a more viable alternative for people and now it's kind of becoming shit again if we are all going to be forced to use wayland and relearn everything all over again. And it's only catering to 2 types of users and many people are using the computer for many different things and they perceive computing in different ways too, so whats important for some may not be important for all.
Free time is important to people and sinking time into creating a working setup that fits your needs only to have something break, or performance issues, or whatever is dealbreaker for a lot of people. I've experienced a lot of Linux burnout because of these factors and it's limitations.
A lot of people in this thread don't do anything special with their machines that's why they don't have the same experience because they just need an web browser and a code editor, and some video games, and they're good to go.

I understand Stallman's arguments but they don't hold water if you want a competitive edge in the craft or field you are apart of. Like if Linux was so freeing, why is not the #1 platform for video game production or music production, let alone art, video editing, etc. The only thing I see as free is the zero dollars in my wallet using it. Sorry but I'm tired of seeing my peers make a living with computers and thriving while you Linooks fanboys want to keep us broke and on the island of broken toys. Hard pass...

I had the mindset. I just got bitter when I realized it would never end with these systems. The only way to be free of it was to use Windows or MacOS.

Flawess experience for you and your workflow/usage. But that's not everyones shared experience, not even close...

Le sigh...
I'm going to bed goodnight guys and good discussion. I just can't wait to believe you guys again, install a new Linux setup only to hit brickwalls every step of the way, barely getting things to work or not work and just huffing the "trust me bro, just one more time bro" copium hopium that you guys inhale like crackheads...

I know how to compile, I have custom software that I compiled myself. I just think expecting the average user to do all this extra dev work to get a normal experience is completely in the "lost the plot" territory. Once again Linux drifts toward the fringe...

> You run the command, go back to working on whatever projects and come back later when it's finished compiling.
That's bullshit and you know it.
