This past week I made the choice to take my online #privacy more seriously. I had no idea how many accounts I had out there on websites I had forgotten existed. In my research of how to #degoogle and #deamazon I read that it's a marathon and not a sprint. Boy was that person right. I have to cherish the small victories and look at how far I've come in such a short amount of time. Now, back to the salt mines of deactivating accounts!

Developers are using "tarpits" to combat AI scrapers that ignore robots.txt. Tools like Nepenthes and Iocaine trap crawlers in infinite loops, wasting their resources.

I haven't adopted #PassKeys for my accounts because, as far as I can tell, there aren't really any options that let me own my private key and store it myself; they all depend on trusting somebody like Google, Meta or Apple to handle it for you, which completely defeats the purpose in my opinion. Like #PGP / #GPG, I want to own the private key so I can manage it myself. Trusting your PassKey to a third party app that's only on your phone introduces a single point of failure.

This is your reminder that if your post is set to "Public", then anyone can and probably will, do anything they want with your posts.

With over 20,000 Fedi instances and 10m accounts, you have no way to tell who or what is consuming your posts and what they could be doing with them.

Consider your public posts as if you just threw them out on the sidewalk for all to see. There's no expectation of privacy on the sidewalk.

See: Awakari for an example of a service that has been on Fedi for over a year now that sells data based on topics discussed.

How do I know they sell it? There's an option on their site that says "Free first 30 days of access", implying that there's a fee after the 30 days.

Do yourself a favor and don't post publicly if you expect privacy.
