AMD said recently that they don't think RISC really moves the needle regarding efficiency, and I tend to believe them.
What I think is the real advantage of ARM is the fact that it's licensable chip designs so anyone can fab them and include ARM cores inside of different SoCs that do different things. With x86, you really have to buy the chip from Intel or AMD and then anything else you want to include has to be on a separate chip, it can't be on the same die. This is why you'll never see like x86 wifi routers or fiber modems. -
