Khan performed the Hajj in May and told the Telegraph in August that “outside London, Mecca is probably the most diverse place in the world”. Actually, Saudi law completely bars non-Muslims from Mecca, on pain of prison. So much for diversity”. Nick Timothy, the Shadow Justice Secretary, “There’s not even a pretence of honesty or consistency.” So while Britain must open its cathedral to a nightclub and its square to mass prayer, Mecca need not open its gates to the unbelievers. On 16 March the adhan, the Islamic call to prayer, was called across Trafalgar Square, the square that hosted Saturday’s “celebration”. Women prayed at the back, behind the men. Timothy was brave enough to call this “an act of domination”. But the Mayor called this description “prejudice”. He has not commented on the women at the back — who, one might think, are subject to a deeper prejudice.
This all illustrates a deeply inconsistent approach to faith. Christianity is to be patronised or condemned — even by some of its supposed representatives — while Islam deserves handwringing respect. The ground is then consolidated against critics with a mixture of threats — the Batley Grammar School teacher who showed a cartoon is in his sixth year in hiding under a new identity — and the more widespread and even more insidious charge of racism.
