Alternative is more padding and sets up an entirely new plotline that has nothing to do with anything. All it does for FLCL itself is presenting medical Machinae lore for retards.

Progressive, the actual sequel gives is....flat. It falls short on various fronts. Its maybe worth watch, but meh. Its Haruko trying to get Atomsk's dong all over again.

And there is Shoegaze which is about the psionic MC, maniac pixie dream girl (maybe somehow the creators talked Adult Swim out of overusing Haruko) and Atomsk as phat birb on a tower. Remember how I have mentioned? Well spoilers ahead: In Alternative, the situation was so hopeless, that the entire upper class fled in a colony ship to Mars. One of the protection measures had a little side effect; You see, they are living in some kind of pocket dimension that turns them into spookie ghosts. Spookie ghosts that are visible to the MC that is talked into climbing the tower with la ebin BPD grill so she can reach Atomsk, because.... I don't know. Maybe Haruko found a Sonichu Medaillion and is now wearing it off screen and this caused the dumb tower to appear so the Studio didn't have to design a setting that is more appealing than a commie block. Anyway, one of the main characters from Alternative is now working for the spook agency from the original, deals with the Tower and the new plot from Alternative also gets resolves. Hooray!
