Idk about jews, but divorce existed in most ancient european societies and it wasn't a problem simply because there was no advantage to be gained in having one.
The result was that couples only divorced when there was no other option. Then the wife went back to her father's tribe and he had to try to find her a new husband. The kids weren't an issue since they'd likely been fostered off to secure some alliance or other.
