The 1972 McCombs/Shaw paper on the media's power demonstrated that, although it could not influence opinion as effectively as people thought, the media is able to set the agenda: to dictate what people care about, what people are talking about.
You can say you hate a thing or that the thing is stupid, but that means you are talking about the thing, which means you are part of the thing. If the thing is not serious, then opposing the thing is boring; if the thing *is* serious, then opposing the thing is letting your enemy choose the battlefield.
