They had pride in what they made. Modern devs put the game itself second at best and the teams are bloated bureaucracies and for every person that actually wants to make a good game, you have five that either want to bloviate about their political beliefs or stomp the last egg out of the golden goose so they can use "maximizing value" as a resume padder when they fuck off to a more reputable industry.
